Default Outside door handle

Hi guys, This is my first visit to the forum. I traded my '27 T bucket for a really nice '74 T- top car. I could use some help with the passenger side door latch assembly procedure.....the door was locked shut with the inner door panel off, so I fooled around and got it open. I took all of the latch ***'y out and cleaned it with carb cleaner and re-lubed it. Now, I know the door had been fooled with, because I found glass pieces in the bottom of the door..I found the clip that belongs on the rod linkage to the outside door handle was missing. I assume that was the reason the door wouldn't open because the rod was binding the latch assembly. I bought a clip..now my question is which way does the rod insert into the outer handle. I know there's a right and a wrong because the rod is bowed to clear the key lock...I just don't know which way it inserts into the outside door latch. Any directions from you guys would really be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tony
