I just received a set of floor mats for my 71 coupe. The quality seems good, but the fit is awful. One mat has a cutout on the left, which matches nothing on either the driver or passenger side. I could have done as well buying generic mats from the local auto parts store.
You don`t say what brand, or where you got them.... but I bought a set for my 71 coupe that has a cutout on the left.... it`s for the passenger side. It helps it curve up at the front....
Do these look like what you have? Note the rear edge of the mat sits right at the rear edge of the footwell.
Hi SRQS,
I've always figured the notch on the left side of the passenger's side mat was to allow the mat to lay flatter around the additional bump in the floor on cars with an automatic transmission.

Alan

Those sure look like original Black 1977 only comfort weave mats, very hard to find.
Hi bmj,
They are or were owned by a Forum member.
He posted them (or sent the photo for me to post, I can't remember) a while back when there was a discussion of floor mats.

Thanks, everyone. The passenger side mat just looks wrong. I don't really get the cutout. Seems the mat would lay correctly without it. The mats were made by a well-known manufacturer of auto replacement carpets and mats.

Hi SRQS,
Cars that have an automatic transmission had a piece cut out of the underbody.
A molded fiberglass 'humped' piece was bonded in place over the hole.
The hump encroaches on the carpet on the side of the tunnel and on the floor.
The notch in the mat is there to help the mat fit better on automatic cars.
Does the mfgr offer different mats for 4-speed and automatic cars?
Regards,
Alan
The underbody is cut and the hump bonded in place here.

It`s very hard to see in my photo.... due to the black carpet.... but Alan is right, there is a hump right where that notch in the mat is. And yes, my car is an automatic, so the mat fits in there very well.
