Default Tank Sticker Location?

I just got one of those borescope or snake-scope things. Im wondering if I could use it to locate the tank sticker?
Is the gas neck bibb in the way? What part of the tank should I look? Are they always in the same location on the tank?

Any place else they could be?
Thanks Steve

The build sticker is normally on the passenger side of the tank and you'll need to remove or bend the boot out of the way to see if it's there.

It was many years ago but I remember just reaching the top of the tank from below from the back of tank and getting my hand on it. It was mostly loose and I was able to get it out. I believe it was on the driver's side.

Hi Steve,
I think it depends on the year of the car's production as to the tank sticker's typical location on the tank.
You'll likely have to push the rubber spill/drain boot down with your fingers to get the scope in position.
Although rev reports success, MANY people warn to NOT try to remove the sticker with the tank in place…. you can REALLY damage it.
It's not wise to even touch it with the tank up. The paper is typically extremely fragile. You could damage the sticker moving the tip of the scope over the paper. Be careful if the sticker is important to you.
Seeing if the sticker is there is really just to try to determine if it's worth the work to drop the tank to get it.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

Location on my 71.

I have a computer printout from GM Oshawa that lists my build. In lieu of a tank sticker, would this be an equivalent document?

it would bw for me, but maybe not to a purist corvette person, some say they should not be removed from the tank, but they would still be decaying from age etc.

Mine came out mostly intact, but also mostly unreadable. Strange thing is, when I dropped the tank to replace it last year, I expected to see some indication of where it was bonded to the tank but there was nothing. No bits of label, no glue traces , nothing.

I'd say better as it is verified by GM.

Hi 72/86,
I believe what information is available from the Document Service depends on the year of the car.
Certainly there's no production information available on individual 68-72 cars.
The NCRS has access to and offers shipping information on specific cars but no informations on colors/options.
Regards,
Alan

At the time, circa 1990, you could send GM Oshawa your vin and they would provide you a computer printout of the sheet that had your vin on it and the options along with another 20 or so vettes that were also on that single sheet of paper. The service was free at the time and I don't think it was available in the US at that time. I believe this service was discontinued several years later. I'll try to find this sheet and post it up.

Is the Geprge Zapora service still available? Below is a copy of what he does.
--Vintage Vehicle Services can provide vehicle build documentation on Canadian produced and Canadian sold General Motors vehicles from 1945 to the present. This includes but is not limited to Canadian built Oldsmobiles, Chevrolets, Buicks and Pontiacs such as 1970 GTO's, 1969 442's, 1970 Chevelle's, 1993 to 2002 Canadian built Camaro's and Firebird's among others.
In general, on vehicles from 1964 to present, for $57.75 CDN, it will provide trim and paint codes, production date, engine size and horsepower, dealer, number produced, and all the option codes and what they mean on your particular VIN. Also included are the engineering specifications where available on that carline.
Canadian built cars in the late 60's usually had all numbers in the VIN, no letters, or the number 1 or 2 for the plant code as a rough guideline. On US sold and built newer vehicles ( 1980's to current day ), using information from your Service Parts ID Label we can also generate a package for you.
You can contact us at 905-440-7697 from 8-5 eastern time Monday to Friday, or via email at george.zapora@cc.gm.ca

Sample p. 2 of his report

I found my sheet. I'll try to get it posted up tomorrow. It also shows a date which I assume is the build date. Mine is 27 Jan 76.

Yes, he is correct, But this post evolved a bit and you asked:

Resdoggie has a Canadian delivered car and is fortunate to have Canadian documentation. It is similar to PHS, Pontiac Historical, documentation. If you are buying a GTO you want the PHS doc saying it was built as a GTO not a tempest.

The only place that a build sheet was affixed to a Corvette, was on the gas tank, but people have found them in other spots. Some lucky owners have found build sheets stuffed into the dash, stuck in a seat spring and under the carpet in the rear compartment. Owners of 78-82's have found them folded up above the rear spring, too.

As a car passed through various stations on the assembly line, build sheets were often left in the car. Because of this, there were usually one or two build sheets laying around loose in the interior, when a car arrived at a dealership. Of course, these were usually discarded during dealer prep. I was at the dealer when my 81 arrived, and there were two build sheets in the car, which I removed and saved.

GM of Canada has records for new GM cars sold in Canada, and GM has records for Pontiacs sold in the US, but no other records are available for any other GM cars built, prior to the late 70's.

Ok, so here's my printout. Quality has deteriorated over the last 25 years but some maybe readable. My car is circled in red and as you can see, is heavily optioned minus the optional 3.70 axle.

File size too large. I'll rescan later.

Done.
