I recently purchased a 1972 Vette from an out of state seller, off Ebay. I went immediately to the DMV to register it to make sure that everything was done correctly, but before I turned it in, I took a photo to see the dates and such. When I bought the car my intentions were to see if I could find the "original" owner to learn the history but the person I bought from is no help...in many ways. Is there a way to trace the ownership if all I have is the date the previous owner bought the car and SN being as I don't know from what state HE bought it from?
Hi LB14,
Many owners are interested in finding the previous owners of their cars as you are.
Many states no longer have records that go back to the 70s-80s and often those that do don't give out that information.
There are a few individuals that as a business trace car's histories.
Also, the NCRS has shipping information on many (but not all) cars which includes the dealer the car originally went to.
The fee for the Shipping Data Report is $40.00. You must join the NCRS to use the service, $45.00.
A third possibility is an Information Wanted ad in the NCRS publication THE DRIVELINE asking for information on a particular car.
In your case I think I'd start with the NCRS shipping info and see if you can at least know where to begin.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan
