This summer I was gifted a 1977 L-48 from my father and have been doing small projects on it since then. He had owned it for 20 years and did work on it over the years (new brake calipers, steering pump, tires, top end work, etc).
I have read over the Forum Sticky of "Ten Rules for Buying Your First Corvette" but was looking for a little more "detailed" list of important areas to check for road-worthy safety on the Vette once you've got it. After being under the car several times, a newbie sees surface rust/grease/etc. and I don't want to overlook something obvious.
It's easy to get caught up in making it look pretty and faster, but a newbie needs to stay calm and focused on important matters first!
Despite what Signor Fanfani said, "Anyabody canna maka da car stop, it taka a genius toa make ita go fast." I suspect a re-examination of the brakes should be first on your list. Depending upon on when done, of course, there could be serious issues relating to caliper seals. Knowing the health of seals, tubing, esp rubber tubing near the engine in the fuel line would be another area I'd suggest be carefully checked.
To me, the three big dangers to you and your car are:
Brakes-calipers, master cyl., pads, fluid, hoses, old tires
Steering- bushings, tie rod ends, shocks, balljoints, old tires
Rubber fuel lines- lines at fuel tank, lines at fuel pump
You've got to stop, steer, and keep it from burning to the ground.
Make it safe, make it reliable, make it pretty.

Thanks guys, that's exactly what I was looking for. New tires were put on about three years ago and it's been driven each year since. I was actually looking at the steering components this weekend and thinking that may need analyzing.
