Default Spare Tire Carrier

Just finished squeezing, and I do mean squeezing, a 255/60-15 spare into the spare carrier. Had to take advantage of every bit of adjustment on the carrier support bolts.
While adjusting the rearward support, I noticed a washer on it that seems to serve no purpose.

The AIM shows it. There's no way the support bolt could be screwed in far enough to force that washer against the bracket, even with the OEM size spare. Anyone have a guess?

I'm pretty sure on mine (with the stock tire) it goes up until that washer is trapped. I'll have to check to be sure.
Maybe a left over from earlier cars that never changed when they updated but that does seem threaded a long way out....

Are the two front bolts backed down to allow for that tire? That rear bolt shouldn't be out that far I don't think.

Actually, what year is the car? In 78 when they opt the 255 60R15 they also had a space saver spare (and might have a different tub since I think they also increased the gas tank size) I'm not sure where the flat tire would go since it likely didn't fit into that tub....

everything before would have been F70 or GR70 or 225/70 which is narrower than the 255 by a significant ammount

Hi,
I've no answer on the washer's purpose either.
Seems it could ONLY come into play IF the bolt is/could be turned all the way up!
Haven't tried it on my car.
???
Regards,
Alan

Well M! your 6:23 picture answers that question!
Thanks!

Keeping in mind that mine is probably off a Datsun or something...
It was my understanding that the rear bolt was drawn up tight (up to that washer) and the two front bolts where adjusted to capture the tire snug and then fixed in place using the locking / jamb nuts

But I'm frequently mistaken

It's a '77. The two front bolts had to be backed all the way down to fit the bigger tire. The 225/70 fit without a problem but the rear support still wasn't close to be able to be screwed all the way up.
Regarding that photo with the support screwed in all the way, that tire doesn't look inflated, though it might just be an optical illusion.

The 255 is about 1-1/4 wider than the stock 225 would have been. The 225 spare should fit and I would have thought without having the bolts extended that far.

Have to wait for someone with a 77 to chime in on how theirs looks.

I don't even know if the 78 did have a different tub, only assume so based on the fuel tank but maybe it was the same and the top came down farther and that's what required the mini-spare...

But anyway, that's what the washer was originally for back in the day

You can kind of see where the bolt was adjusted for the 225/70 before I extended it for the bigger tire.

That's the part I don't get

The width difference between a F70-15 and a 225-60R15 isn't usually that much (3/8 to 5/8) on the bulge so I'm surprised it's even that low with the 225 tire.

Need to have a 77 owner chime in

Just curious now
For my 72 the lower tray strap is PN 3914217

The tray I think went from black fiberglass to grey in 74~75 but I think stayed the same sizes etc.

FWIW, I think the 78 had a bracket that lowered that rear bolt a couple of inches.
