Default Good replacement headlights?

Any recommendations on replacement headlights with H4 bulbs? Maybe AutoPal or some other? I want basic headlights to look and shine better than originals, but not expensive or with stuff like halos or city lights.

Look and shine better + not expensive +legal is difficult or impossible to find.

Unless alternatives have very recently been approved (highly doubtful) the brightest legal lamps you can use are halogen versions of your originals.

I believe your original outer (lo/hi beams) lamps are trade #4000. Such is a 37.5/60 watt bulb. (37.5 watts at low beam; 60 watts at high). The halogen replacement is trade #H5006. This is a 35/70 watt bulb.

I'm not sure about the original high beam bulb for a '74 but the halogen replacement is trade #H5001. This is a 50 watt bulb. I believe that the standard incandescent was 40-45 watts.

While the wattage differences don't sound like much they add up and your '74 switch/wiring is not suitable for all halogens without using an accessory relay that gives high beam power. This is easy to do and considering the "barely adequate" nature of the original wiring can actually improve matters with the original type bulbs by minimizing voltage drop at the lamps. If you don't use the relay wiring scheme expect high beams that "wink on and off" as the autoreset circuit breaker in the headlamp switch opens and closes. Also expect less than expected performance due to severe voltage drop, a rapidly failing headlight switch and even the chance of fire.

I won't make any recommendations for HID or LEDs because, again, I do not believe that any such configuration is legal in the USA. One of my pet peeves is people installing HIDs/LEDs in fixtures not designed for them (this blinds oncoming traffic) or using ridiculously high color temperature replacements whose blinding blue and even violet light feels like it is burning my retinas.

I run the sealed beam halogens mentioned by SwampeastMike, It seems to be plenty of light. If I decide I need more light, I'll run heavier gauge wires and relays.

I run Hella E-codes with Morimoto HIDs. Absolutely amazing light output. I did have the LEDs in there but the Hella lens distorted the LED and gave it a halo effect on the sides.

Go Eurocode lights, you'll wonder why you didn't make the switch long ago. I've used Cibie, mostly, but some Hella, too.
