Default 1969 COPO Corvette

I've read articles about the only 1969 COPO Corvette to leave the factory. Here's a link to one:

http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/..._copo_l88.html

My question is, what was it about this car that required it to be ordered as a COPO and not a regular production order? I've looked at the specs listed and see nothing that seems to have been unavailable as regular production options.

Who can say? The M22 was a 69 option and should not have required a COPO. Stranger things have happened. There was a car posted here a while back with a COPO for a non-recommended color combination.

Yeah, the non-recommended color combo I can understand. This particular car I cannot.

Hello mp ..
As I understand it, in 1969, the M22 was an option for the L88. The regular M22 had 2 plugs ... one for fill and one for drain(the M20 and M21 only had 1 plug for fill). The drain plug of the standard M22 was magnetized. It was made by Lisle, and there were 5-6 variations over the life of the M22(fwiw).

In 1969, this car was ordered by Rick Tomkins to have a magnetized plug for fill as well. So, it had 2 magnetized Lisle plugs, thus becoming a special order or COPO.

According to the build sheet for this car, the option looks to be ZW1. I have found other information that indicates ZW1 as a M22, but without a specific reason for the separate option code.

According to trans guru Paul Cangialosi, in 69 all Muncie's were changed over to dual fill/drain plugs. My 69 with the numbers matching M20 has dual plugs. Hard to believe you would have to go to a COPO just to get a magnetized plug but weirder things have happened....

Hello Grant ...
Corvette by the Numbers says that happened in 1970. My early build 1969 M20 with matching numbers only had a fill. I had to drill & tap a drain. I suspect the changeover may lie somewhere toward the end of 1969 production ... ??

I think you are probably right. He said it was changed in 69 so that could mean almost anything. My build is Oct 24 69. Trans build was Oct 13 and it has the 2 holes. P9R13A.

the COPO and FSO was on the same box on the tank sticker. if the car had a trim override it could be a FSO. if its a COPO there should be a engineering drawing of the special part that required it. this is more likely just dealer hype

Hello Grant ...

I no longer have my 1969 judging manual. Do you know if this issue is addressed NCRS manual-wise, and if so, at what serial number .... ??
Just curious

Hello Nowhereman ...

I'm not quite understanding what you said there ...

Scroll down and see a copy of the actual M22 tank sheet. It even specifies COPO. If it were a FSO, the tank sticker would so specify ... right?

So how much value is added for a magnetized plug?

for a COPO that required non RPO equipment not called out in the assembly spec and engineered drawings. For a COPO the engineering department would have had to get the spec out parts to build it. Like I said the FSO and COPO used the same box on the build sheet. If you do some searching on here under JohnZ with COPO and I'm sure he explained it better then I did.

Sorry, I don't know. In Cangialosi's book Muncie 4-Speed Transmissions, he says, "By the start of 69 these cases and all future cases had the drain plug boss drilled and threaded."
I thought this meant the 69 model year but I guess it was probably more like the actual 1969 year.

from the NCRS forum this car is the only L88 that does not have J56 brakes. But that does not make it a COPO. what does it was ordered car was ordered with two magnetized drain/fill plugs as standard M22's in 1969 used only one magnetized plug and the other plug was unmagnitized
