Default Another 1980 Body-off

My good friend Craig and I lifted the body off a 1980 corvette over the past weekend. Took about 2 hours to lift off and place on a dolly. I had already done all the prep work.

I used two welded/bolted up square tubing rigs and 4 ***-alongs to lift the body.

I plan to powder coat the frame and put in a 420hp crate engine.

Let me try to share photos with a Google photos link:

Hi l57,
It looks like you had done some good preparation.
Nice set up to lift it too!
At first I thought you'd just reinforced the building's structure, but see the frames you built.
Well Done!
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

Hi Alan,

I saw way too many lifting mechanisms that gave me a big pause so when I saw another member on the forum here who used the square channel iron, I thought that was the way to go. Each leg of the lifting mechanism breaks down into 3 pieces with 5/8" bolts and are fully adjustable. The steel is really heavy duty but I plan on keeping these even when the restoration is complete. I did the welding myself with a Hobart 220v welder.

By the way, in North Dallas here, most of the quotes to sand blast and powder coat the frame are in the $600 range which is way cheaper than I thought it would cost.

looks good, its so true that preparation makes the job so much easier,

car looks in good condition ? no rust? should be a (relatively ) straight forward clean up and rebuild eh ?

are you planning on putting extra welds in the frame with some gusseting ?

Hi Bazza77,

The frame looks very good, my friend Craig did eyeball a crack on the shock mount show below:

Yes, I plan on welding on the frame especially around the body mount brackets and adding some stout gussets in the corners.
