Default Opinion on this engine stamp [THREADS MERGED]

I am considering adding a C3 to the stable and admit that i am not even close to knowledgeable enough to validate a numbers matching legit car. I am interested in the car with the attached pad stamp but im not sure about the originality of it. Im aware of broach marks and i think that is what i see to the right of the VIN but im not even 100% on that. I think that the apparent circular swirls are troublesome but wanted you guys to chime in before i took the next step to find a qualified inspector

Thanks

Just to put it out there i lean towards this being a restamp.

Thanks

What year car? I can see it's a big block but the last three digits of the first series should be letters. My 70 is CZU

...Opinion on this engine stamp...
It's a mess. Is there a story as to why it looks this way? It might be legit, but could be very difficult to prove.

If the block has been decked as little as .010" , the numbers will disappear. This could be a simple & honest re-stamp of the original numbers.

Tonawanda October 13 L89
Wonder why someone gouged up the stamp pad like that? Mine was made 7 days later and the stamping looks the same.

The fonts are completely correct but you will never be able to verify it as original since the pad is wiped out. There is a company, CCSA, that is able to identify the broach marks of the original cuts that were made in the stamp pad at a given time to identify originality. He uses a method similar to the ballistics databases used by law enforcement. I am guessing this pad would be undatable.

It's not the way it was, when it left the factory..... I'm sure plenty will agree with that opinion! Look closely at the engine code and the one underneath it.......

1969 L89 with heavy duty clutch? Pretty rare for sure.

Other than all of the scratches on the pad (someone crudely removed an earlier painting?) what are your concerns?

The stamping looks pretty similar to this L89...

Good luck... GUSTO

If everything checks-out, a little Chevy Orange paint will easily cover the scratches.

True, but won't bring back the factory broach marks.

Hi OTZ,
You might want to get a peek at the vin sequence stamped on the transmission case too.
It was typically done with the same gang holder and at the same time as the engine pad. So often displays similar characteristics of the vin stamp on the engine pad.
It's on the side of the main case and there's also a stamp indicating the date, and plant at which the transmission was assembled.
Regards,
Alan

Are we seeing some 'bounce' here?

I'm pretty new to this as well, but I'd be very cautious if this is a big ticket car. No broach marks would make me very leary of purchasing without all the rest of the paperwork for provenance. Good luck, the 69 w/BB is my fav.

I have a 68 w/CE stamped block that I didn't trust as an L71 till I dropped the pan and saw the 4 bolt mains and felt the dimples (actually pimples) on the Con. Rods.
