I am considering adding a C3 to the stable and admit that i am not even close to knowledgeable enough to validate a numbers matching legit car. I am interested in the car with the attached pad stamp but im not sure about the originality of it. Im aware of broach marks and i think that is what i see to the right of the VIN but im not even 100% on that. I think that the apparent circular swirls are troublesome but wanted you guys to chime in before i took the next step to find a qualified inspector

Just to put it out there i lean towards this being a restamp.

The fonts are completely correct but you will never be able to verify it as original since the pad is wiped out. There is a company, CCSA, that is able to identify the broach marks of the original cuts that were made in the stamp pad at a given time to identify originality. He uses a method similar to the ballistics databases used by law enforcement. I am guessing this pad would be undatable.
It's not the way it was, when it left the factory..... I'm sure plenty will agree with that opinion! Look closely at the engine code and the one underneath it.......
Hi OTZ,
You might want to get a peek at the vin sequence stamped on the transmission case too.
It was typically done with the same gang holder and at the same time as the engine pad. So often displays similar characteristics of the vin stamp on the engine pad.
It's on the side of the main case and there's also a stamp indicating the date, and plant at which the transmission was assembled.
Regards,
Alan
I'm pretty new to this as well, but I'd be very cautious if this is a big ticket car. No broach marks would make me very leary of purchasing without all the rest of the paperwork for provenance. Good luck, the 69 w/BB is my fav.
I have a 68 w/CE stamped block that I didn't trust as an L71 till I dropped the pan and saw the 4 bolt mains and felt the dimples (actually pimples) on the Con. Rods.
