Default 68 non ac heater?

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me if this is actually a 68 non ac system?

I was under the impression that 68 systems were cable operated, but this chap assures me that they had vacuum ports..

Many thanks!

Dave

The non-A/C ducting on my old '68 was cable operated not the vacuum system my '69s (both A/C and non-A/C) use. Whether or not any '68s used vacuum I can't say.

Looking at it perhaps he removed form a '68 that had been retro-fitted. I had no problem using the cable system from my '68 in a '69.

68-75 cars without AC used Bowden cables to open and close the foot well vents. Vent ***** are on the console and have to be manually pushed/pulled for operation. UPC 1 Sheet E9 in the AIM shows these and how they install. UPC 1 Sheet M2 shows the defroster cables.

The non AC system is pretty simple.

Thanks... My (corvette central) AIM seems to have the pages relating to the early cable only system, and the aircon system... But nothing for a part vacuum system... I've found this with a few bits recently, actually.. I'm guessing that The aim is correct to early 68, but does not seem to take mid year design changes into consideration.

My 68 is also a late one, so if a part vacuum one is correct in yours Wes, it's probably right for mine too!

look in the beginning of the AIM your looking under the options. the first half of the AIM is devoted on how to build a BASE model car.

The heater/defroster installation is shown in the AIM (71) in UPC 1, Sheets M1 through M7. Perhaps it's in a similar location in the 68 AIM.
The Bowden cable that is operated by the RIGHT side thumb wheel of the controller opens/closes the heat door in the heater box so is the only temperature control for the system.
The vacuum manifold that is operated by the LEFT side thumb wheel of the controller manages the flow of air in the heater box….. floor duct, defroster duct, or both.
Regards,
Alan

The lever of the hot/cold door with it's Bowden cable connection.

One of the vacuum pot connections that controls air flow direction.

Alan
You are correct no vacuum on 68

Brilliant, thanks all for the contribution/clarification!

Whilst it might end up taking more effort to get the right fittings, I'm secretly thankful that it is cable operated - simple mechanical force feels more diy user friendly than another vacuum system!

Hi all,

Unrelated to previous ask; but same category!

Just test fitting the heater blower assy to see if it clears the headers - but slightly puzzled at the whooping great gap at the end where the heater core pipes come out... should the gap really be like this? (With no core or inside box)
