do your research and know the ins and outs of moving a vin tag to another windshield post.
there are many scenarios where your state DMV or a overzealous LEO could make you regret it.
the main thing, have title in hand, in your name, of that VIN tag, before you start any work.
Got the windshield frame cleaned up and primed. Now I have to crate it up and put it away for a future, future project. I have a plan on where to store it but only a 3/4" clearance. I'll follow up with those pictures. It's going to be a tight squeeze for sure.
The only ones I know of are the partials on the engine block, transmission, frame rail under drivers side rocker and near the #4 body mount on the drivers side.
I see rear and front clips on Craig's L. from $500 to $2,500 mostly with VIN tags. I just saw one recently from a wrecking yard in the same condition only it's a convertible for $2000. If you could use a good convertible body from the bird cage back with a VIN, PM me.
Rich, Thanks for the info. I already have a complete car including the VIN in tact. I bought the car at a very reasonable price since the birdcage and rocker channels were completely rusted out. There was also fiberglass work done to the back deck and rear light panel that is really a mess. This "rear clip" takes the place of that car. I will have to transfer the front clip though. The frame on the complete car I bought very reasonable is in excellent condition. Before I move the VIN from my car to this clip I will see what it takes to do that legally. This is all for a future project so I have plenty of time to sort out the details. As we know, PennDot can move very slowly. The project I'm working on now is keeping me very busy, it might be a while before I get to this one.
My 2 cents, just because you do not think you are doing anything wrong does not mean the State of Pennsylvania will agree with you.
Removing, replacing, altering, etc. a VIN tag is a violation of federal law, as well as the law in every state I can think of.
This is one of the few serious no-nos.
Having said that, you understand the risks with your decision.
FYI: You will absolutely need he correct rosette rivets to attach the VIN tag to your new birdcage. The wrong rivets is like waving a red flag at the authorities. FYI: In some state, the mere possession of rosette rivets is a crime.
I think if you move the portion of the windshield frame with VIN intact and splice it into your new car you technically haven't removed the tag. CARS sells complete new '57 Chevy bodies with the exception of the cowl area which they use to keep an original VIN. Everything else on the car is completely new. In essence that is what you would be doing by using part of your original frame with VIN intact. Problems arise when tags are removed and re-riveted. Good luck on your future project. I think you did pretty well at $2300.

Yeah...there was an ad up on Craigslist in my area for a pair of the rosette rivets. I'm positive it was a setup to catch people up to no good.
I got the rear clip crated up and ready to put in to storage. It's going on the second floor of the garage through a small loft door. Theoretically I have 3/4" of clearance, I'll have to see how that goes.
