Hi P,
I've seen some original carpet with 'extended' bindings. But not as long as what you posted. On my 71 the tails are about 1" long on the piece for the rear compartment floor.
Can it be tucked under?
I would be careful trimming them so that the stitching doesn't begin to unravel.
If you want to be extra cautious un-sew the thread and tie the 2 ends into a knot and THEN trim the binding.
Regards,
Alan

Just tuck them behind the speaker panel, then you don't have any issues and it won't be seen.
That's a great point about the bindings coming unraveled Alan- I hadn't thought of that. I suppose that I can just tuck them out of the way for parts like the rear speaker carpet, but here's a pic of the binding that's attached to my passenger front carpet, around the rain diverter.
Would you try to tuck that as well? Especially the tab hanging 'outboard' from the car. Other than trimming it, I guess I don't have much of a choice- leaving it exposed and hanging out like this isn't going to work-
Poncho... I'd tuck both under before I'd cut them. The inner will tuck under the outer can be placed under the thin sill plate. I'll ask my guys in the shop tomorrow if you want but I don't think they cut them either. I do own a very low mileage 78 that would show how it was done at the factory but I've not looked at the car on over two years.. I can dig it out Tuesday if you'd like me to.

I trimmed mine even with the carpet as the eye expects. And, then discretely put a single drop of crazy glue on the end stitch. Looks flawless and no issue with long term unraveling.
