Default 1975 tach

Tach. reads about 1000 RPM low. Will anything other than the circuit board cause this?

If it has an aftermarket circuit board, there may be an adjustment pot. Have you tried bypassing the tach filter?

I suspect you dread the thought of tearing into the dash but 90 percent of the time the problem is the circuit board.

Thanks, I tried that but no change.

You are right. I was going to reset the needle but I think I have to tear the dash out to do that too.

No, turn the key on it goes to 7000, start the car it goes to 600 (cold idle), after warmup it drops to below 0 at idle, rev.it up or drive it and it works but is about 1000 RPM low, shut the engine off and it goes to 5300.

If it's original, it's amazing it made it this long. By the time you take out and disassemble the tach to reset the needle, you might as well put in a new circuit board. The best out there is from Willcox.

Here's a techie tach board article I wrote some time back but it give you the background on tach board technology. Essentially, circuit components and copper paths deteriorate with time. In fact, your 75 was the first year for HEI...and board design changed several times until engineers figured out how to improve them. Copper paths too thin, etc.

As 75 states above...Wilcox does it right and their support services are superb!

Thanks, I guess it's time for dreaded dash removal.
