Have to say I agree with Vettebuyer. I did not install the carrier last summer, but there are angles you walk up to the car that just look bad without the carrier. One is from the side, quite often you can see behind the rear tire, and straight to the ground....something really missing. The rear view is also missing something, and looks hollow. As has been said, if you clean up the fiberglass, with the straps forming a Vee shape, the back view looks solid.
I understand the idea of trimming weight.....but is it also possible that rear end weight, helps with keeping the tires stuck in hard turns or acceleration.??? Really don't have any technical or engineering data to back this up,...just a theory. I remember reading on this forum about the weight, down low can be a plus for handling?? But, I am not claiming this is correct.
Anyways, for me, it just about the looks....I like it without, but I think it looks better with the tire carrier installed - with a tire in it or not. I just got done putting mine back on the car earlier today.

I have no comment on engineering or structural integrity. The idea that the slight weight difference would affect the performance of these cars is a little funny. I guess if people choose to depend on a can of fix a flat rather than an actual tire to get their beloved car home, thats their call. And, I suppose if you have a custom car, the look might appeal to you with no carrier and the underside painted and chromed, etc.
My personal opinion, C3 Corvettes have a tire carrier in the back. You barely notice it except when its missing. When its scrubbed and detailed, it looks good. I just hate the look of a C3 (or a C2 for that matter) without the carrier. It leaves this big gaping hole where GM designed a place for something thats obviously missing.
Absolutely pure personal preference. I dont think theres anything anyone can say on either side that changes the fact that you either like or dont like the look of a missing carrier. Decide for yourself.
Agreed. I just dressed it up some. I had the "V" support chrome plated many years ago. I'm thinking of having it Powder coated red as the rest of the the red parts!
But the mid /late 70's still couldn't get out of there own way,
Oh, but kenba, my 78 Pace Car can definitely get out of it's own way. The engine has been rebuilt and modified to put out 350 HP instead of the factory 185 HP.
