Default Double Din Touch Screen

Been wanting to do this for a while. problem most double din touch screen stereos are too deep for the console. so recently aftermarket companies have been coming out with double din stereos that do not have cd/dvd players. Mainly because people are downloading more songs than buying cds. so they are very shallow and can fit in the console.
So I bought a cheap 7" touchscreen stereo with bluetooth, radio, backup camera. so a basic model. They do have units with GPS but i am going to wait to purchase a better name brand like sony or pioneer when they come out with a version of there own.

My idea is to mount 3 gauges where the factory stereo was. I chose autometer phantom gauges. fuel level, temp, and oil pressure. So i will be losing the clock and the voltmeter. I also will be losing the seatbelt and headlamp indicator lights.

I started by making a gauge mount from abs plastic

Then I cut a piece of abs plastic to cover the old gauge area

then I cut out the gauge area for the touch screen

Next wiring up the new gauges

the finished product. I still have to make a piece of finish trim to go around the stereo mount. The stereo actually didn't come with one

Good idea. Backup cameras are useful.

Maybe you could add an idiot light for the alternator. If you take the lens from some other car you could make it look factory. You could also add the headlight warning light, looks like there might be enough space.

Well done and looks good! I took the easy route with a single din and flip up screen. What are you using for speakers/amp?

I started reading thought this is gonna suck out loud, but i was dead wrong, this looks really nice, very slick install,

When you have in sitting in the dash please post update pictures...

On the clock, who cares they are on most new stereos, the volt gauge, if you ebay led volt gauge they make some super slick small surface mount ones, even can pick colors, might be worth a look a volt gauge is handy...you need the idiot light for some alt too....

The double din install looks great but I'd like to see some pics of the easy route as well.

Cool! I really like that. If I didn't just buy a new single din radio I would have attempted this!

I bought another centre cluster with a single din. It's a Pioneer h/u with bluetooth and an option for gps. Install was easy i.e. no cutting required just plug and play. I also have a JL Audio class "D" 4 channel amp installed in the storage compartment above the jack. A pair of 6-1/2" Infinity speakers behind the kick panels. No cutting there either. Also, I made a speaker box, cutting required lol, for a 10" sub in the rear. Pics aren't the best.

The flip up display retracts so you can play your tunes and view the gauges. Or, watch a movie, the passenger that is.

Nice-

A couple ideas for the voltmeter-

you can use one of these- super small- and cheap- pretty easy to find a place for it-

Or as Zwede said you can do an idiot light- something like this-

That's a good looking installation.
I'm eager to see the link when you find it.

I have a single DIN "cubby hole" insert I plan to mount in the space where you mounted gauges.

That's the way I'm going to go.

How do you like that head unit?

Just fine! It has some adjustability - the screen can move in/out horizontally as well as the flip angle. Better pic of flip up added.

Your screen is really inexpensive, but I think a screen resolution of 440x240 is a bit punishing if you excuse me the pun.
However the installation is really clean, hat off to that.
