What I though would be an easy id has me wondering.
On the right side of 4 speed transmission horizontally above general motors corporation casting it has 3851326. Then vertically at right rear before extension it says P0205. What is this transmission from?
I take it as a muncie, I know 4 speed, and is it Feb 05? I have a 1973 vette although I discovered the shifter is from a 77 so not sure about transmission
Hi H,
The partial stamp you found is the 'build' info for the transmission.
Generally something like:
P0E03A
P… Muncie 4-Speed Aluminum Case
0-9… Model Year
A-T… Month
01-31..Day
A,B,C .. Suffix range. Wide, Close, M22.
There was typically another stamp indicating which vehicle the transmission first was installed in. The same stamp was used as was used on the engine pad.
Do see anything else?
Regards,
Alan
This example shows both stamps but also an X-out on the case.

3851326 I believe is a patent number, above that should be a cast in number ending in 325 or 010 or 660 or 661, that number will give you a range of when the trans was first used, if it`s out of the car counting the rings on the input shaft will also (usually) tell you if it`s an M-20, M-21 or M-22, remember I said usually some aftermarket input shafts have no rings
The number I should be looking for is on the top or the trans?( your pic look like top) It is in the car and I cleaned the left and right side off and cleaned but see no other numbers?
Thanks

That is where I get the number P0205. Some trans id sites I look at say 63-66 trans only have P and 4 numbers saying it would be Muncie Feb 05 and the castin # 3851326 is close to what the 63-66 casting # 3851325.
I do not see any other numbers in view.

Hi Gary,
You could very well be right.
I'm pretty dumb pretty quickly if I get more than 1 or 2 years away from 71 cars!
Sorry if I misled you!

I'm guessing only. I know engine was changed but is a 73 4 bolt main but from I think Chevelle from T1035ckh. Then talking to you a 77 shifter so why not a 63-65 trans. I would think if trans went somebody wouldn't of put one this old in though? I will look some more but lots of mysteries.
Thanks for you help and pics

Probably 3851325... which is a 64-65 case take the time to read the ID info here: http://www.munciebook.com
