Default 68 Steering Column Diameter??

Does anybody know the diameter of the steering column tube (1968) where it passes through the dashboard and firewall. Couldn't find it in a search.

There was a column and lower dash from a later year in the car when I got it, and I am putting a 68 lower left dash pad/ignition back in and considering putting a new Flaming River or Ididit column in and want to see if there will be problems passing through the dash.

Thanks

The 68 steering column is a one year only . At the fire wall it has a surround bracket [specific to 68 and part of the column] that bolts to the firewall with 2 or 3 bolts. After column removal the hole is fairly large. Where it passes through the dash it is supported with a saddle clamp that bolts to the pedal support. The diameter of the IDIDIT column is almost the same, remember the aftermarket columns are not colasalbe [a safety item]. Which also means that if you have P/S and ever want to install a Borgeson steering upgrade, you cannot. Get an AIM manuel for reference. T

I already have the old column and the entire interior out and an AIM. Unfortunately, the AIM doesn't tell me the diameter of the tube so I can ensure that I order a replacement column that will fit reasonably well around the lower dash pad.

IDIDIT has two diameters available, 1.75 and 2". When you say they are "almost the same," which size is almost the same? Both IDIDIT and Flaming River will build a custom length for me because I already have Borgeson PS.

I just want to know the diameter of the 1968 tube.

And if Terry can't get the measurement, email me at support@Willcoxcorvette.com. I've got a 68 column out of a car right beside my service desk.

We just did the Ididit column in a car and if you go this route you'll probably only want to get the tilt version and not the tilt tele version. The tilt tele version of their column pushes the column back closer to you about 2" from the stock non tilt column while the tele column pulls the wheel inward about 1.5" closer to the dash. Our customer was very satisfied with just the tilt function.

I'm not sure I understand this. Lets assume that a stock non-tele column is at position 0" and positive numbers are closer to the driver and negative numbers are closer to the dash. Assuming that the tele extension is 1.5" and the numbers below are "about", not exact:

Stock non-tele = 0"
Stock tele retracted = 0"
Stock Tele extended = +1.5"
Ididit Tilt only = +2"
Ididit Tele-Tilt retracted = -1.5"
Ididit Tele-Tilt extended = 0"

The retrofit '68 column on their website indicates that it is tilt only so it may not matter. I was assuming that I would order that in a length that will work with my Borgeson steering gear.

Did you have any issues with the Ididit fitting cleanly around the lower dash?

Call Ididit direct and they'll give you the exact numbers on both columns. They were very helpful and clued me into the fact that putting a tilt tele in a 68 wasn't what would be best for our customer.

But my understanding is that the tilt only column pulls the column inward and tilts out of the way, the tilt tele column puts the wheel closer to you from the get go and even closer when you tele it outward.

I had no issues with the dash fitment of the column. You do have to do away with those ill fitting lower column covers 68 used.

This is the part number I used for the column, 1120700010
This is the part number I used for the hub. 2202350030
Since I'm not a direct dealer for their columns I also found the cheapest price came from this fella and the shipping was quick.

http://www.classicrods.com/ You can tell them I sent you to them. (unless you find it cheaper).

Will it work with a Borgsen... I feel pretty sure it will since it mated up to the factory coupler and gear box and it the Borgsen is designed to do the same in reverse.

Thanks Kevin.. You should call the guy at Classic rods.. he was most helpful and offered free shipping on a call in order... I think I spent around 600.00 for everything freight included but I don't know if he'd give you the same discount he gave me but it's worth a try.
