I hope you are not putting all of your hopes in winning at car shows to be your way of enjoying your corvette . There are a lot of politics in car shows and who you know. It could be a let down trying to explain to your son why even though you have the best car , someone else won. I've seen this so many time over the years that I don't even go to them and choose the cruises. I remember a time when a local family that does most of the custom paint work in the area and well known with ties to the shows put a 60's Dodge 4 door in a class with early mustangs and won . People were standing there with their mouth open . Another local show has a guy with ties where he brings a tractor trailer to use as a stage to hand out the trophies . He has a grossly done 47 Ford 2 door sedan that he enters every year . Guess how many trophies he has . Just saying don't put all of your hopes in winning . Take it out and enjoy it.

If you want more horsepower -and want to preserve the originality/value i would build another engine - take out your original one out, put it on/in engine stand or cradle - fog it ( oil in cylinders & heads) - plus you could then detail your original engine to the cats meow - and admire it and have a conversation piece -
You and your son would have a great time in building a killer yet streetable engine - be fun researching and gathering and assembling a new engine and installing it and tuning it
respectfully ............................ tom
PS - GM has some high horsepower engines that are fully assembled - and reasonable priced and i believe with a warranty - this is the way i recommend to go - this way you know you are getting a proven piece and not junk.
