My fix for shift console carpet
I thought about getting new hardboard but the one thing with I didn't like about the originals were that it was a solid stiff piece which if I put a new one in I'd have to take the seats out every time in order to remove that entire piece if I just wanted to get at the radio or something. Surely I could put some flexible plastic backer to the carpet which would give it enough rigidity to fit snug into the console. I looked for some really thin plexiglass but they didn't have pieces long enough, 36" was the longest. Then I looked at a roll of rubber "floor saver" at Ace. $12 got me 4 feet and I decided why not try.
I cut out a piece large enough to fit the carpet, sprayed both sides with 3M Super 77 adhesive and then trimmed of the rubber excess.
I think it worked out quite well. Just enough strength to keep the carpet upright, but I can unscrew one screw and fold it back when I want to get to the radio. It is a little wavy up by the front portion but the wife said that she didn't even notice. Works for me!
