I'm a new Corvette owner, so I'm only starting to become aware of the pecking order of model years. You know, who feels more attractive, desirable, superior, valuable etc. ....
Can someone fill me in on these details so that my rubber bumper '81 and I will know our place in the community?
All that said, as far as I'm concerned, C3's are Corvettes - everything else is a mistake... :-)
Hi Peter,
A good question but one that I don't think can be answered simply.
Because the car was built for 15 model years there is a considerable difference in the model years.
People find one or more to be their favorite for various reasons……..
When they were 'introduced' to Corvettes
A 'soft' spot for a particular one they remember from their past
Exterior appearance
Certain levels of performance
Certain degrees of comfort
Affordability
Availability
Current price
And, the 'love the one you're with' philosophy.
So most people have one year, or a group of years, that form/influence their 'pecking order'.
So, for you?
Regards,
Alan
I dont like that pecking order label, makes it sound like all c3s are not equal, they are in my book, values vary but all are c3s, all are equal, even if different,
i happen to own a 69 bb convertible time and again i have heard it called the most desirible popular c3, not by me, i bought it because i wanted convertible and it popped up, i also almost bought a 68 and 75, the 75 was convertible with 81 style bumpers,
but i also liked 81s so much i have owned two of them putting over 100k on one daily driver,
Nope, no pecking order with c3s, only some elitist owners might be peckers about a certain year....
.
Lots of good comments here. I wanted an L82 4 spd and I didn't want computers. My need for minimal cargo space dictated newer than 77 while my anti-computer stance dictated pre 81.
Looking at 78's to 80's I choose a 78 S/A paint car. I meet with professionals in the legal and engineering fields...often at the site. That means they see what I pull up in. The two tone silver/grey and no spoilers of my car was perfect providing a sense of taste but still a bit "out there".
Had my needs been different, I probably would have gone with an orange sugar scoop car.
The reasons people pick the vettes they do are varied.
Enjoy your new car!!

Welcome. Pecking order? I bought my vette 29 years - not as an investment nor to keep it factory correct. I bought it to have fun and have my way with her. If I spend $50K+ on her over the years and she sells for $10K, well, ain't life a bitch! Enjoy your ride the way you want to enjoy it.

Actually, those of us who own/have owned several other models of Corvettes along with C3s do not believe they were a mistake.
Personally I think the '78 is at the top of the pecking order because before then you didn't get a real glove box, just a silly pouch. What's that all about?
