So I am looking into biting the bullet and buying factory replacement covers but am being told the first time you wash them the paint in the groves comes off due to the fact they just paint over the chrome. Has anyone else seen that issue?

Are you referring to the Paragon made reproductions? I have never heard that but I cannot imagine that is the case with those, considering what they cost.
Hi Mac,
I've paid attention to the Paragon reproduction covers over the years and don't remember hearing that people were having a failure of the paint detail.
But?

Alan
thanks for the feedback. I spoke with one of the main corvette suppliers. He was open and honest and said he had heard about this issue more than once. I don't want to spend $2500 and then have issues.
Purchased these from Paragon when I had my 76 and I never heard of that nor did any of the paint do anything and I washed the heck out of the car pipes included.
The picture below is after 2 years.

Have a new set for my 69 project when it's time. Never heard of such a thing.
Hi mac,
"I spoke with one of the main corvette suppliers."
Since Paragon is the only manufacturer of the reproduction covers, and supplys the other vendors that sell the covers, perhaps you were being exposed to some sour grapes?

Alan
Paragon has sold a decent amount of these. I find it hard to believe this issue would exist without any one of us hearing about it. Also, I am pretty sure they stand by their product. As Alan mentioned, anyone selling these gets them from Paragon. Go directly through them. The price is the same across the board I think.

Hi aj,
Yes the original covers, (they were called 'shields' back then), were entirely chrome plated, and then the paint detail was added to the 3 pieces.

Alan
This is the paint on a 'service replacement cover' purchased in early 1971.

These are the Paragon shields that will be going on my 69 project down the road.

I have a original side pipe car and will likely get the repros also. I may also get my originals restored as well but the repros are supposed to be excellent. And I also heard they receive full points on judging. They are supposed to be that good but I have not studied them up close yet.
Hi Ed,
The original shields have some identifying 'marks' on them that I don't know if Paragon is able to include in their reproduction.
When the shield is installed on the car they're a moot point. (I suppose there are some folks out there that must have the originals.)
There is an interesting detail about the center section to be aware of though. Originally there were right and left centers… the 2 drilled holes were at one end or the other, (Paragon's are rights and lefts).
Sections have been seen with 2 sets of holes on the section which enables the piece to be a right or a left. I'm not sure if folks have figured out just where or when these were available. Maybe the new 68-69 Manual will address this.
It'll be interesting to see what you find on your shields when you do something about yours.
Regards,
Alan
