I'm putting the dash/instrument panel back in after 5 years and have a question about a duct.
My car is a 73/non air. The duct I am wondering about attaches to the top of the heater box and empties out under the wiper controls in the upper center. This is a small duct that is open at all times. I was just wondering what is the purpose of this? It looks like it would direct air downwards toward the gauges. The reason I am asking is I am thinking if it were closed off more air would be directed through the windshield defroster duct in the dash pad.
That duct is for an AC car, there is an outlet just under the wiper switch on those and it has a shut off built into the bezel.
My car is a non AC car. I realize what you are saying, however this duct is much smaller, and comes out just above where the AC duct would if I had AC. It is very small, maybe 3/8" x 2" . Also it is mounted in the flat above where the AC duct would be and blows vertically down.
Hi MAP,
Since that little duct is separate from the duct for the defroster, putting a piece of tape over the opening might direct more air to the defroster.
I don't think it would be much of a difference though because the duct is so small.

Alan
looks like the same thing that was in mine before installed aftermarket a/c.
Keeps frost off the gauges. That's about the only thing I figured it might do. I'm covering the hole in the heater box and will make a plate to cover the hole in the bezel. Thanks for the information.
