Whether you're working with the soft top or the hard top, you can install so that the insulator is almost invisible from the outside.
Here's how:
Position the top and mark the outside edge plus 1/4"-3/8" margin with blue painter's tape. Raise/remove the top and locate the insulator, using the tape as stop/guide. Wet the surface before placing insulator and squeegy excess water out, using a credit card. Locate the top to see that only a minimal amount of the insulator is visible.
Because I have both tops and use them both, I found it problematic to be doing this so often. I ended up removing the deck lid and taking it to have the "invisible" 3M film that's used on facias, etc on the entire lid. Now I have permanent, invisible protection, regardless of which top is on the car. The film can be removed at any time if I so choose. In my mind, this is the perfect solution. Not cheap but very effective.
