Default 72 Engine Build - Come Along

I have decided to rebuild the 72 engine that I got some time back with my 72 purchase, and no time like the present to take it apart in anticipation of the build.

I have already removed the Q-Jet carburetor and sold it to a forum member that needed it.

I have removed the tach drive distributor and sold it to a forum member that needed it.

Original intake is part number 6263751, date code F232. (June 23, 1972).
I had already taken this to my powder coater and had it powder coated chevy orange. I will have the valve covers powder coated to match.

I removed the original heads. They are sitting here and most likely will not be used in the build. Final decision on that to follow.

I have already removed the original pan, powder coated it chevy orange and then sold it. Regretting that decision now but it is what it is so I will find a donor oil pan for use with this build.

That leaves the short block now minus the oil pan to disassemble.

Next off will be the flex-plate so I can mount it to my engine stand; then I want to remove the harmonic balancer, then out will come the guts.

I'll take some pictures along the way. Time to get in the garage, more soon.

Best regards,

David Howard

What do you intend to use for a carb on that spread-bore intake? You sold the best option when you got rid of the Q-Jet. It is twice the carb of any aftermarket unit you will buy, and all it needed was a rebuild.

No firm decision taken yet to use the original intake. May use the Edelbrock Performer I have here after it is media blasted and cleaned up.
That is the beauty of rebuilding a Gen I Chevy engine, lots of options with aftermarket parts.

I was looking at Edelbrock aluminum heads as well but no decisions will be taken until I get the block back from the machine shop. Before that, well, need to get it apart.

I sold it to someone that needed and wanted numbers matching which I don't care about on this engine build. If I stay with this intake I can always locate another Q-Jet, plenty of them around and numbers matching not an issue.

Thanks again.

Pull it all apart and let's see what the block looks like. We can go from there. If the block is trash or already has been bored, it's all a mute point. Lots of options . As you know I am good at spending your money, but I do it wisely.

Unless your goal was an original/stock appearing 72, I don't see the point in re-using or spending money on the stock cast iron intake manifold. It's a boat anchor that doesn't flow all that well.

Hey David , what's that Blue thing on the right side of your picture. I don't want to use one of them anymore for sure.

350-400 HP should be good enough. I have a forged crank for it so that should work. It will head to engine shop next for some cleaning, measurements, boring. If the crank does not work out then I think we might just bump this up and make it a 383. Why? Because we can. LOL.
More when that happens.
David

A useless artifact from the 80's. Snow thrower has pretty well obsoleted that one. I let my grandson handle it because it is light weight. LOL.
