Default 1968 AC wiring

Trying to wire in all new wiring harness and I'm stuck on the AC wiring harness. 1968 original AC car. The doc rebuild sheet shows "dash harness ignition switch accessory tap part# 8968102". I googled and can't find it anywhere. Assuming this is a connector to a separate harness possibly?

My main dash harness has a "heater switch conn", which I plugged into the back of the heater control unit. The AC harness appears to have the same connector but it's called "console fan speed switch". Im confused where the console fan speed switch goes.

I also have a plug for "console climate mode switch" but no where to plug it in.

What do I plug into the two switches on the left side of the heater control? There are two, two pronged male connectors. One is side by side, the other is stacked vertically.

On the main dash harness, where does the "heater resistor conn" plug in? I found an image of the resistor on the back of the ductwork, but I don't have a square hole for it there. It looks like a non AC option possibly? I have the connector in the harness I purchased.

I lurk a lot on here, search a lot and couldn't find these answers. Sorry if I missed them. Thanks all in advance for any help.

This is from the 68 AIM. It shows the AC harness and how it connects to the heater control. The AC harness connects to the fan switch and to a switch on the side of the heater control. The connector from the dash harness to the fan switch is not used. The AIM also details how the 14 gauge brown wire is removed from the dash harness connector and added to the AC harness. Hopefully this helps.

Thank you for the info. I've got the AIM, so I will look up more there. Still kind of confused.

Hey Welcome,
I'm a 68 Safari yellow AC owner too.
Do tell me more about your car.
When was it made? It's on the trim tag located on thee drivers side door jam.

The manufacture date is on the trim tag? I thought the VIN was the only indicator of date. I believe it's a June car.

It's a coupe, supposedly an original 427 (390hp) car. Motor was replaced with a 402 at some point, has an M21 in it, and 3.08 rear end. I bought it to restore with my dad. He graduated from West Point in 1968 and spent all his money on a brand new 1968 safari yellow 427 vert, sold it about 9 months later. We couldn't ever find the VIN off his to track it down so I bought this one as a very abused dragster and over the last 3 years we just about have it finished and bringing it back to life. Interestingly we ended up finding his vin about 6 months ago, tracked down his original car and tried to buy it. Owner won't sell!

Any pics of the heater control wiring that you have would be great! The AIM has me cutting my brand new wiring harnesses! Thanks

The time built date is in the upper right corner of the trim tag. That code will tell you the month and day your car arrived at the station on the assembly line where the trim tag was attached. June 68 would be K for month plus two numbers for day of the month.

Does anyone know what #6 is in the AIM above? I have two totally different switches. My diagram says it's the console climate mode switch?

Still can't find where the "heater resistor conn" connects to inside the car. 3 prong white plastic connection

#6 is on the driver side of the heater control and held on by two screws.

The heater resistor connector can be found behind the lower passenger side dash pad. You may have to remove some duct work to get to it.

Thank you for the reply. I see location of #6 in the AIM drawing, but I can't find it for sale anywhere. Not sure what to call it.

I see by my searches where the resistor would go behind the heater ductwork, in the passenger compartment, but there is no square hole cut out for it. I've had all the ductwork out. I'm wondering if AC cars didn't use this resistor and that connection should not be used or if all cars used it, then maybe someone put a different year piece of duct in my car. Wouldn't surprise me.

thanks again

My 68 is an AC car and every car except the L88 came from the factory equipped with a heater/ defroster. If you look at the heater core box, the heater resistor connection is on top and to the right of the main defroster duct that's in the center of the dash.

I took the main defroster duct completely out and don't see it. For the heater resistors I see online, I can only find ones that say "non AC". I am wondering the AC cars don't have the heater resistor inside the car? I have a resistor on in the engine bay for the AC. Could anyone point me to a drawing of the heater resistor on a 68 in the passenger compartment? Thanks again

I dug out my wiring diagram that came with my wiring harnesses and saw that the heater resistor is for a non- AC car. I misidentified a switch on top of the heater core box as the heater resistor. It's been a while since I did the install and I forgot what it was. As for the switch on the side of the heat control unit, without knowing what it's called it looks like it'd be impossible to find one. There's a forum member that has a lot of 68 only parts for sale. Maybe he could help you out. His user name is 1960fi. I've bought parts for my 68 and he's good to deal with.
