Alternator Identification
I'm good with the 32Amp and 12V NEGative but I hope the rest represent manufacture dates etc. .... Thanks
It would not have been used as a replacement for Corvettes though, as Corvettes never used a 32 amp alternator. The lowest output alternator ever used in a Corvette was 37 amps.

I'm familiar with the 545 alternator, because I've seen them before. I have a couple, in a pile of about 15 old alternators I have, and have seen others, with various dates from the early 70's. I don't know that the 545 had an OEM application, but it might have. I've always just assumed it was a service replacement.
As far as the lesser amperage output of the alternator, it could possibly cause some issues. Depending on the options, your car came with either a 42 or 60 amp alternator. The 32 amp one could cause some charging issues, in particular under heavy load situations like getting caught in the rain at night, with the radio, defroster, wipers and lights on at the same time.
The dates are pretty easy to figure. It breaks down as year, month and day. The "2" on your alternator is 72, but it could have also been 82, 92, etc. The "L" is the month, in this case December. An "A" would be January, a "B" February, and so on. The "8" is the day of the month.

When my 71 was new I had a situation very similar to what gbv62 described.
This is a radio only car….. the first time I drove it needing the lights, wipers, defroster and radio, the alternator wasn't up to the task.
It turned out to be a loose belt, but it seemed clear the alternator needed to provide all 42 amps in that situation.
Regards,
Alan

gbvette ... you say you think it was a replacement alternator and that has merit because of the date on it. My car is a Sept '71 build and maybe the original failed and was a warranty, Maybe??
