I think the 1100545 was a service replacement alternator, sold in the early 70's by Chevrolet for Chevelles, Camaros, etc. 2L8 is the date, decoding as December 8, 1972.

It would not have been used as a replacement for Corvettes though, as Corvettes never used a 32 amp alternator. The lowest output alternator ever used in a Corvette was 37 amps.

Hi gbvette62 ... Thanks for the reply ... I didn't think she was the real deal when the "Corvette Black Book" quotes 1100543. Having only had her on the road for 9 months can you see issues with the lesser amperes and is there a reference sheet of sorts that you might know of for alternators, DOM etc etc to put in my file for future replacement needs??

Listings of Corvette alternators are readily available in the Black Book and NCRS Pocket Specification Guides, but I don't know of any list for other GM alternators. GM parts books, as well as old AC Delco catalogs, list alternators, but you'd need books for all years of GM brands and models, to compile a complete list.

I'm familiar with the 545 alternator, because I've seen them before. I have a couple, in a pile of about 15 old alternators I have, and have seen others, with various dates from the early 70's. I don't know that the 545 had an OEM application, but it might have. I've always just assumed it was a service replacement.

As far as the lesser amperage output of the alternator, it could possibly cause some issues. Depending on the options, your car came with either a 42 or 60 amp alternator. The 32 amp one could cause some charging issues, in particular under heavy load situations like getting caught in the rain at night, with the radio, defroster, wipers and lights on at the same time.

The dates are pretty easy to figure. It breaks down as year, month and day. The "2" on your alternator is 72, but it could have also been 82, 92, etc. The "L" is the month, in this case December. An "A" would be January, a "B" February, and so on. The "8" is the day of the month.

Hi,
I believe during the 72 model year production the alternator part number 1100543, was used on the 454/270 hp (without a/c) engine.
Regards,
Alan

Hi OZ,
When my 71 was new I had a situation very similar to what gbv62 described.
This is a radio only car….. the first time I drove it needing the lights, wipers, defroster and radio, the alternator wasn't up to the task.
It turned out to be a loose belt, but it seemed clear the alternator needed to provide all 42 amps in that situation.
Regards,
Alan

I am using the "Corvette Black Book" as my go to for facts referencing and I appreciate all feedback ... Thanks! . I started the thread based on things not marring up and as Alan71 knows I have a Survivor and I am just working my way through everything to tick the boxes as they say. I knew nothing about my little girl but am much wiser now Thanks to you Guys, so excuse me for questioning something as I hang on everything you tell me.

gbvette ... you say you think it was a replacement alternator and that has merit because of the date on it. My car is a Sept '71 build and maybe the original failed and was a warranty, Maybe??

Could I trouble you to see if your 545's have the five finger open face for better cooling as mine does??

Hi Alan ... I'm hearing what you and gbvette are saying and at this stage I have not put it under those loads, I think I may have to, just for the exercise. I have seen the 545 alternators being advertised for Chevelle, Camaro and Corvette which goes against the grain of what OEM is, however they still seem to be a mystery child. I wish I could find out more about them
