Default Changing defroster cable

68 non A/C car

Need to change the cable that controls where the air is directed.

I had the lower console apart to change one of my Astro ventilation cables and see this cable is broken.

Looking at diagrams it appears the air flapper is directly behind the gauges. Is this right?

I doubt there is any way to reach it from the side, gauges have to be pulled I'm guessing?

not sure of any difference between 68 and 69 but my cable snakes along the bottom of the box for most of the way to the passenger side end , so access should be from passenger side . Put your hand up under there and feel for the lever first , might even be able to see it if your a contortionist.

P.S I'm talking about the blend door ! controlled by the wheel !

If your talking about the cool air ducts , they are behind the kick panels (two little square **** on edge of console plate controls them ?

Last edited by bazza77; Apr 2, 2017 at 06:13 PM. Reason: Blend door or just cold air ?

Hi,

"Need to change the cable that controls where the air is directed.
I had the lower console apart to change one of my Astro ventilation cables and see this cable is broken. "

I believe this info is good for 68 cars too:
I believe the 'temperature' of the air is controlled by the right thumb wheel and a bowden cable.
I believe the 'direction' of the flow of air is controlled by the left thumb wheel, a vacuum manifold, and a hose to a vacuum pot on the left END of the air box. Another hose runs to a vacuum pot on the TOP of the air box.
There should be a total of 3 bowden cables, one for the air temperature control, and two for the kick panel vents.
Regards,
Alan

Here's the vacuum pot on the TOP of the air box, the other is similar. You cab also see the black bowden cable headed to the air temp door in the air box.

Hi TJ,
Thanks.
That's why I had the note about the info applying to 68? cars.
By 71, (maybe earlier), non a/c cars had vacuum operated control functions for the air flow direction.
Regards,
Alan

just to close this in case anyone is ever looking for information

The cable operated blend door on the 68 is directly behind the gauges and there is no way to access it without removing them, not matter how hard you try to twist your arm up there!
