Hi,
Someone sent me this photo so I thought I'd pass it along.
It's Bernie Agaman, a pretty well known/respected/liked racer from N.J. .
Apparently he was one of the last drivers and cars that you'd want to see pull up in the lane next to you!
Regards,
Alan
"Think" I might remember seeing him/car at York US30…. but that's an awfully long time ago.
I remember seeing Bernie racing frequently at Englishtown in the mid 70s. I believe his Vette was a 71 with 454 running in SS/CA. He was a super competitive racer for sure. It was fun to watch his car leave the line - huge wheelstands on each run. He did have his share of parts breakage problems back then due to rules constraints and limited parts options.

Hi BK,
Some how my title didn't end up with all caps like I intended.
The information sent to me didn't indicate whether it was a real LS-6 or a put together LS-6.
Either way, it looks like BIG fun!
Regards,
Alan
Hi jr,
I figured you'd like it.
I was going to add it to your thread but I didn't know if I should!
Although I really like old race cars, I hope that if this car was delivered as an LS-6 option car, it's been restored!
Regards,
Alan
Alan - I don't know if Bernie's Vette was originally an LS-6 car. By NHRA rules, it would not have to be. In any case I'm sure there were a number of LS-6 type, NHRA rules modified, engines in that car over the several years they raced it. Bernie's connection with Truppi Kling, who were the Chevy stock & super stock gurus at the time, assured that there was constant experimenting and development going on with that car.
Hi BK,
Thanks very much for the additional info.
For a time in 71 my car shared a garage (really a modified small barn) with either a 59 or 60 283/230 car.
For a period of time it was the national record holder for one of the lower 'sports' classes. As I remember, it was a car that hadn't been worked on, but was in a somewhat obscure class in which it could shine!
I can remember seeing it in the barn on some Saturday and Sunday mornings with the T still on the windshield.
(I don't think I've dreamed up the record holder part!)
Regards,
Alan
I'm not old enough to have seen those super cool 60's race cars run, since I'm a '71 model myself, but I LOVE them! I've seen some run in nostalgia drag races. My buddy who's the same age as me, took his 61 348 3/2's Bubble top to a nostalgia race and show, (his was in the show, not the race)but got his car chosen as a celebrity pick by non other than Big Daddy Don Garlits!
Back in the 70s the Northeast was a hotbed of NHRA stock and superstock racing. There were many national record holders racing weekly, so Alan, that 59 or 60 was probably one of them.
In the mid 70s I joined the fun myself, racing a 69 Camaro 396/375 in A/S (see I can drive a stick). While guys like Bernie were setting records and running under the NHRA indexes, mortals like me were running a couple tenths over, like 11.5 on 11.3 index, and it was tough to compete. After a few years of that I switched to bracket racing.
Regarding the LS-6 issue, if you look at the two pictures of Bernie's car, one shows SS/CA and the other SS/DA. I'm not sure he was running the same engine variant in both cases. Although, at some point, NHRA began allowing you to add weight to move the car down one class. Maybe someone here can explain that.
Hi jr,
I spoke again to the fellow that sent me the black/white photo.
His belief is that it was a real LS6 to begin with.
I didn't want to push him too far, so I really don't know what he's basing that on.
It's a very cool old race car in any case!
Regards,
Alan
