I'm looking through the paper work for my wife's 71 and found out that the original owner sold it to Michigan Corvette Recyclers. Is anypne familiar with that company? I'm wondering if this was totaled and then salvaged. Any suggestion on where to take it to see if what ever was done, was done right? After knowing her for 25 years, this is the first time I look through her paper work.
I'm located in southern NH and work at the Mass border.
The alignment of the drivers door is awful with respect to,the hood and rear.
If it's the company I'm thinking of, Michigan Corvette Recyclers closed at least 5 or 6 years ago. I remember their inventory was bought by a couple of other vendors, maybe Vette Visions, Vette Masters and/or Corvette Mack.
They did deal mainly in used parts and wrecked Corvettes, so it's possible that the car had been totaled, or at least damaged. That's not to say that they might not have dealt in some used Corvettes too.
I can't recommend a shop in NH to look at it for you though. If you don't mind travelling a little, you could try Jim Glass Corvette in Kingston NY, or the Corvette Center in Newington, CT.
Yes, that is the company. My wife had no idea about it. The other kind of disturbing part is that I see that the brake calipers have been replaced about 5 or so times already. The proportioning valve was also replaced. Looks like it may be a problem with this style.
The car is not running 100% right now, so to take it on that kind of a journey is not real safe at this point. The car sat for 9 years and needs some work.
How can you tell the calipers have been changed 5 times ?
She has paperwork from the original owner, from the person she bought it from, and then from when she had work done before I knew her. Just seems pretty excessive, but then again, the car has not been driven much, so that may be a big contributor of the problem.
looks like this may be a case where there is a higher potential you are going to find out some things you don't want to know...
Joewill,
You are probably right, but I just want to know what I am starting with so I know how far to go with this car. Do I even consider restoring it or do I just get it back to running and have fun with it.
The rear view mirror was loose so I took it apart and found rust/rot in the windshield frame. I now think that there was some pretty serious rust in the driver hinge part of the frame. That door never did close or open correctly and the door gap is way off. I am now wondering if there is more rust that I care to worry about.
I'm sure others are in the same kind of boat I am in. This feels like I am opening a can of worms. This car was my wife's car before we met, so she is pretty attached to it. I want to make sure it is safe, but not sure I want to go crazy with it based on what I am finding out.
