Need help understanding 1982 electric radiator cooling fan
I have an 82 stock.. When should the electric cooling fan come on.. Should it come on immediately when AC is turned on or just when it hits a certain temp?
Also noticed that is seems the electric fan behind the radiator pushes air forward through the radiator and the fan with fan clutch pulls air through the radiator? Is this correct? It seems as though they cancel each other? Thx...r

The small electric fan is a "puller" fan. The fan has a sensor that operates the fan at 238 degrees F. Imo this is keeping most fans from even coming on.
You can purchase a sensor that operates the fan at a lower temperature. Although if you are running stock I don't know what that would do to the computer. I have mine running constantly on my '81. I live in Texas too and have some cooling issues. I don't think this fan really pulls much air anyway. I've got a dual electric fan setup from DeWitts. It will soon replace the fan clutch and stock electric fan.

The electric puller fan is factory set to come on after hitting over 230 degrees. The sensor is located on the passenger side head, near the rear. As mentioned you can purchase a sensor that will turn the fan on at a lower temperature. I live in Florida and installed an aluminum DeWitts racing radiator that dropped my temps down to constant 185 degrees, even in mid summer. I have in the past connected the fan to a relay to turn on when the AC was also turned on, but did not see any difference in my case of any further cooling by using the fan, so I removed the relay.
Good luck!
