Default Borgeson Steering Conversion kit

Arrived today!

Unfortunately the steering gear box is oil stained.

Opened the box and see the torsion bar took a pretty good hit. The bag is ripped, the box puntured and a table spoon of ATF in the bag. The threaded caps are in place at the spool valve. I am not sure of the source of fluid.

I'm mechanically competent but no instructions in the box? I thought that a little strange for an $800 kit.

I'm looking to do this upgrade myself.
Instructions here: http://www.jegs.com/i/Borgeson/153/9...FcRhfgodJNkLNQ

$800??? A little pricier than what I've found.

I see you're in Klein, TX. My daughter graduated from Klein High School. Go, Bearkats!

A couple years ago I purchased a 408 SBF, complete long block. When I opened the create the shipping stand came loose and the motor had been bouncing around inside the create. Upon inspection I found one broken rocker arm and bent stud. I called the manufacturer and shipping company, filed a claim and sent it back. They sent me a new long block. I would file a claim and send it back for a replacement. Especially for an $800.00 purchase.

That would make steering to the right go left. Actually I understand it to be a repurposed and modified Jeep unit.

There is a relationship .

GM trucks, cars and Corvettes used steering boxes from Saginaw gear (previously known as Jacox gear). Jacox came to GM when they acquired Buick. GM spun them off in '99 and they became Delphi Steering.

These new design Delphi steering boxes were used in Jeeps and Dodge Rams (and I am sure other vehicles). 10 years later GM bought them back and they are now Nexteer Automotive. Nexteer's description:

The Nexteer Automotive Power Recirculating Ball Steering Gear provides directional control of a vehicle. An open-centered, rotary-type valve provides smooth operation throughout the steering range while retaining excellent road feel. The integral rack piston converts hydraulic pressure to a rotation force that moves the steering linkage left or right. The steering system and hydraulic fluid also act as a cushion to help absorb road shocks.
Anyway, they seem to have a good reputation.

My install has gone easily. Less than an hour to remove the old steering box, rag joint and collapse the column shaft. My shaft collapsed easily. the hardest part of the install was installing the new rag joint on the shaft (tight!) and bending the brake lines/proportional valve out of the way.

Only problems so far are:

No nut for the pump pulley. My research says 9/16-18 self locking. I doubt it can be found at the local hardware or BORG.

The P/S pump pulley doesn't seem to line up with my crank pulley. Although, it could be related to the missing nut above.

That was transformative.

Finished the install today. No leaks. I did get the coupler a couple splines off and will need to correct that if there isn't enough adjustment in the tie rods.
