I need to change a door ajar switch on my 68. Does it just un screw from the outside or do I need to get to the back side and un plug wires first?
Rich
Hi Rich,
The switch unscrews from the mounting plate in the jamb (towards the exterior).
Are you repairing or replacing the switch?
The wire connections use very small 'pronged' clips that are necessary to install a new switch or make a new connection to an existing switch.
The existing connectors need to be 'backed-out' of the switch to install new connectors.
The connectors are available from various vendors.
Regards,
Alan

Alan,
I'm not sure yet if it will be replace or repair. The plunger and spring popped out onto the garage floor when I opened the door. Is this a repairable condition or do I just replace the switch? Rich
Hi Rich,
I'm really not sure.
If I remember correctly there's some adjustment in the plunger to allow for a variation in the doors…. perhaps the plunger 'turned' all the way until it came loose?
You'll have to take a look.

Alan

Hi Alan, I have to perform this task on the passenger side of my 69, the plunger seems to be OK, I guess the connectors in the switch break inside? I have a new switch, but didn't come with the connectors so I have them on order.
Rich
Hi Rich,
The connectors are typically sold as the 3rd photo shows.
In a group connected to the little 'tree', maybe 5 or 6 on the tree.

Alan,
I removed the hex portion of the switch and this is what I now have. No wires etc. Back to an earlier question : how do I access the back side of the switch mount so I can fish the remains of the switch and hopefully the wires out. The plunger appears to have some threads on the shaft so perhaps it's repairable but I think I'd rather have a good used original just in case. Rich
Hi Rich,
There's only limited access to the door ajar switch wiring.
It's through the small rectangular access panel in the front of the rear wheel well.
It gives you access to the wiring so you can fish it out through the hole in the jamb and make the new connections.

Alan
Here's the panel.
And the wiring… this is the left side.
If you look carefully at the first photo I posted in this thread you can see the wiring/friction tape has been pulled out through the hole in the jamb.
The grommet in the last photo leads to the interior of the car and can be accessed with the interior quarter trim removed.
With age, the shaft pulls out of the nylon wire base, due to the constant spring pressure. If you tried to push the shaft back into the nylon piece to repair it, it will not hold. You have to get a new switch. Lou.
