I'm looking at these led lights that attach to a headband. I'm confused on exactly what lumen led that I need. I know that the led lumens can get very bright. I just want to work under the car not light up the block.

OK. I'll out myself. I'm a flashlight junkie. I admit it. If you are bored check out lights from Nitecore and Fenix. They can get pricey. You might or might not be surprised at how nuts people get with these things. You're serious when you are buying those 18650 batteries.
Lumens is just a measure of how bright it is. 200 and up is getting bright enough to be useful. Some throw their light in a wide diffuse beam, others are very focused and tight. The ones on the headband at Home Depot are generally OK for working on your car but I never find them all that fantastic. Too washed out.
All that said - which is more than anyone really ought to go on about a flashlight - I carry a Maglite two AA LED light every day. I use rechargeable batteries. I had a job that brought me to many incredibly interesting places - tunnels, ductwork, ceiling, walls etc - and it might not be the best overall but was always there and just the right size. Very bright.
We have 3 terriers that I take outside on leashes, the first time and last time are usually in the dark. I have a headlight and 2 caplights made by Bushmell that i picked up at Walmart. The headlight runs on 2 AAA batts. It has 2 levels of white light as well as a red and UV. The red does keep the bugs from eating you up at night lol. I never thought I would use the thing for much other than that, but since, I use it for everything. Have used it in the attic, under the car, anywhere I am working I need 2 hands. Even gave em as stocking stuffers year before last because they were so handy. I think it was 18-20 bucks. And we'll worth it.

if you have a hiking store like REI or EMS, they will have more headlamps than yo will know what to do with. As long as its LED the batteries will last forever. If it will light upothe floor brightly while you are in the store shopping, it will be bright enough, make sure the light angle adjuster isnt to loose,
