Default Part identification

car newbie here. I recently bought high profile valve covers and came across this part not fitting right because it needs to be higher or smaller. The thing is I have no idea what it is and if different fittings are available

This would be a good time to point out how valuable and handy a Assembly Manual or AIM can be to illustrate parts and the order of assembly.
For now you have a un-connected positive crankcase vent that is usually connected to the base of the original air cleaner and most after market open filter assemblies. From your picture don't show an original Aircleaner assembly. You may need a new hose to fit now that the valve covers are higher but confirm that you have a connection point under your present air cleaner and see where you are at. Take a few good pictures so that we can help you along.

Thanks z06LMb, I will look into that. I probably should have been more specific, but I mean the part under the air filter and not the hose.

Hi 80,
Welcome!
First post!!!
As Z06 mentions that tube is part of the crankcase breather.
I agree with him that you're no-fit situation is caused by the air cleaner being used, not the valve covers.
You may be able to use the present base with the proper tube and hose or you may need a new air cleaner base too.
Regards,
Alan

Here's an example of the breather entering the bottom of the base. There are some that enter the rear 'face' of the air cleaner.

Here's a photo showing the air cleaner connection for the breather tube in your post.

80, do you mean that round silver thing?
That's an EGR valve, it recycles exhaust gases, in this case from the crank case back in through the intake system for reburnng.

A very common part if you ever need to replace. Usually around $55 at any parts stores.

Do you have any problems and think the egr could be the culprit or did you just want to know what it is?

An EGR valve that won't open when it is supposed to will cause high NOx emissions. An EGR valve that won't close when it is supposed to will cause rough idle and/or engine dies. The most common failures would be carbon buildup keeping it from closing or a leak in the vacuum line or diaphram keeping it from opening. When not working you can get higher combustion chamber temps which could lead to pinging. One way to test is to spray some carb or brake cleaner under the valve and listen for any change in the idle. If so, you have a vacuum leak at that point.

If I'm reading what you saying correctly is the problem your having that the EGR valve no longer fits because the valve covers are two high ? I know on mine that I have to remove that valve to pull my cover ( stock height ) off ! I'm not positive but I think there is a block off plate for that and maybe someone else will know for sure . Not sure if there is a plate to raise it or a taller gasket or an adapter that will bring it up higher but if this is your question then maybe others can chime in with more info!
Good luck !

Man If only I could read sometimes. Now I understand.
My knowledge is too limited to advise you on elimination of the egr on a 1980 350. That 17064059 is original I side with keeping it. I'm sure someone here knows how to get around this problem.

Hi ZO6,
Well, I thought the same thing!
I still don't see how the valve cover is a problem…. isn't that a typical L-82 valve cover?
Regards,
Alan

Alan, I think the OP bought a set of tall covers not seen yet and somehow it hits the egr. I could be wrong but I think he has a 4 spd which would count out an L82. I had 1st hand experance with an 80 with tall Summit Racing covers and the cover did fit. Just had to tilt the lip of the cover under the egr and bolt down, just made it past touching each other.
My question is - isn't it asking for problems if you simply eliminate the EGR?

Yes Z06 I bought taller covers but the EGR is too big and wont go down all the way without displacing the covers. I wanted to know the part so I could look for a smaller replacement. You gave great advice and even found a problem I didn't know about. Thank you! I am VERY new to cars so anything helps!

Buy an EGR block off plate and get rid of it unless you need it for emissions inspections.
