Default What is this switch for?

Ok... this may be an incredibly stupid noob question, but I have no idea what this switch is for. It is on the console, above the gear shift, and to the left of the AC/Heater control. Is it factory or something some previous owner added?

My guess would be the rear window defroster. What year is your car?

Looking at the picture, it doesn't look factory. Think it was added?

switch looks factory, however the hole looks bubba. Maybe hogged out the hole to "help" fitment?

Perhaps the car didn't have a factory defrost? Have lines in the glass?

Back in the day (I owned a 1979 from 1986 to 2003) those shift console plates did not come with holes pre-cut for that switch and power window switches. You had to do that job yourself. It took a little time to do a nice job.

There are no lines in the glass, perhaps the glass was replaced with non-defrost glass by a previous owner? Needless to say, when I push the switch, nothing appears to happen, lol! I agree with others that hole for the switch looks to be "homemade".

I too have thought of possible uses for the factory defrost switch on my 79. Maybe an override for the factory electric fan is something I'm thinking of. (My rear window defrost doesn't work either, and I really don't have any use for it anyway, since the car lives in the garage.

Now that you mention it, I agree! I seem to recall opening up those holes, in a replacement console plate, but I don't remember who I did it for.......
