I'm not sure if I can name transporters as per some rules here, but I can say while Reliable is a great company, they're 2 or 3 times the cost of many shippers that can do an equal job. Over the years I have shipped many cars and trucks through our states and through overseas transport services as well. Many times I couldn't pick my current favorite service as they were booked or could not meet my timing requirements, so I had to find others - fast.
Some of my best deals came by brokers who found transport services that met my needs to the "T"
I then varified insurance and licensed drivers and when you use a broker, they have over-lapping coverage as well. I document the pre-transport condition of my car and obtain a clear statement of restitution should I suffer any loss or damages. Other then getting a dusty and dirty car now and then, I never had anything to complain about.
There is a member here on CF that is a transporter. I wasn't the guy who hired him however I did receive a truck he shipped from MO to me here in E.PA. No problems.
PS: there is no reason you can give me to support a price $2,000 more then several others shipping the same car, the same way, using the same departure and destination points. You'll see what I mean
I just researched a bunch. Intercity, Reliable, Plycar, and Passport. All are enclosed trailers and they own their own trucks - not brokers. Plycar was the cheapest going from MN to TX for me.
rent or borrow a truck and a trailer, go get it.. you control the cost, when it gets delivered, you control the quality of the delivery. you get a nice road trip and sightseeing the USA.

Would be interesting to read the quotes you got.
I'm not a sales person for Reliable and only recommend them because I was very impressed with their timeliness, professional caring drivers and high quality equipment. Used Intercity once with pretty much the same impression. I suppose it's Reliables exposure that keep me coming back, their trucks seem to be everywhere when collector cars are involved. Last time I got quotes the big carriers were so close in cost it hardly made a difference. Probably no accident, I would think they all know exactly what the competition is offering. I should add when I had non running project cars hauled in open carriers looking for bargain prices with no name haulers, I always had good luck as well. Doubt they had the insurance coverage if any I would have preferred but they all got the cars to me in a timely fashion without extra damage, there was a close call once but fortunately my car came through. Worn out equipment seems to be the biggest problem with low buck carriers, you get what you pay for.
I used Reliable Carriers also. I transported a Vette from Arkansas to Austin, TX. I was very pleased with all of their services. I would use them again if need be.
I agree with all the above. It all boils down to the condition/value of the car to be ship, just how "dear" it is to you and your budget limitations. The major lines have top notch enclosed equipment, good insurance coverages plus tracking, but scheduling can be difficult due to trying to maximize the number of cars in the trailers. I was happy with Intercity Lines when I shipped a non-runner from NH to WA. I was wary of using smaller outfits or a broker because you might never really know the track record of whomever is actually doing the job in terms of equipment, punctuality and treatment of the vehicle.
I used Montway Transport to ship from Sacramento, CA to Miami, FL. Open carrier, paid $1200 enclosed was $1700. They had an open carrier available the next day so I said to go open. Car needed a wash when it got here, but I plan on driving it anyway. Arrived two days ahead of schedule.
They are a broker. They could get me the car faster than any other carrier could and quote was WAY less than the "big name" outfits.
I would like the name of a good transporter for vettes. Just purchased a 1980 Vette in Ohio and need to get it to Texas
We are more than a broker because our job isn't done until your car is delivered. We'll follow your shipment from start to finish. Give us a call for a quote (847-557-0200) or get a free quote on our website.
I used Passport to ship my Vette from Colorado Springs to Las Vegas.
Lowest quote of the big three and excellent experience every step of the way. Would use them again!
