Default 1968 L79 HP vrs HT

For a 1968 Corvette L79, looks like the engine suffix code could be either HP or HT.

Some books have the HT with a "special cam". I thought the HP and the HT both had the same cam, is that correct? or what is the difference between the HP and HT L79? maybe only ac and ps?

Much thanks!

Hi 20,
I believe there was just one 68 327/350 engine. They all had the 'special cam'.
The various charts seem to confuse that when they attempt to describe the differences in the APPLICATIONS for that engine which the suffixes indicate… 4-speed, automatic, p/s, a/c.
Things like the carburetor and pulleys could change because of the application, but not the cam.
Regards,
Alan

Much thanks Alan!

I thought there might be a difference in timing or idle or something for the a/c, or accessories, but looks like all the same in the 68 service manual. Interesting that some sources denoted the HT with a special cam.

Thanks again and for all that you do for this forum!

Hi 20,
Often the carbs and idle specs ARE different depending on the accessories and options, but still only one cam for all 327/350 engines.

Alan

Hi,
HP is the suffix code for the 68 L-79 with AC. HT is the same engine w/o AC.

Got this from Vettefacts.com and it agrees with the information in my copy of Corvette Restoration guide authored by Richard Prince. Just throwing it out there.

•HE = 327-cid 300-hp V-8 with 10.0:1 compression ratio, manual transmission, and four-barrel carburetor
•HO = 327-cid 300-hp V-8 with 10.0:1 compression ratio, Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission, and four barrel carburetor
•HP = 327-cid 300-hp V-8 with 10.0:1 compression ratio, manual transmission, four-barrel carburetor
•HT = 327-cid 350-hp V-8 with 11.0:1 compression ratio, manual transmission, four-barrel carburetor

Thanks for the response and I have seen this a couple of places too.

In other places I find the HP is listed as 327 ci 350hp. I really think the HP 300hp is a typo and I think actually the HP is the L79 option 350hp along with the HT, however I could be wrong. If anybody knows for certain, please let me know. Not for me to disagree with Richard Prince though as he knows more than I will ever know, ha!

Thanks again.

Hi, I have owned my L79 since 1985. It does not have AC and has the HT suffix. I bought an L79 with AC a few years back. It was 100% stock down to the smog and carb. It had the HP code.
