Default wheel trim covers

I bought my '68 big block corvette convertible new from De Anza Chevrolet in Riverside, Ca September 11, 1968. Sitting there on the show room floor it has P01 wheel trim covers. I told the salesman that I didn't like those please put the standard hubcaps on. If they were the real aluminum wheels and if I could have afforded them I would have left them on, but I didn't want anything fake. Well now that I have the chance to buy some I need to know what the difference is between P01 for '68 and P02 for '69-'73. It turns out as far as original goes the dealer did write on the sales invoice that they changed the hub caps before I picked up the car.

Thanks, Ed

Ps: I would attach pictures, but I don't know how to do that.

Hi Ed,
I believe:

The PO-1 was used in 1968.
It can be identified by looking at the end of turbine fins at the hub… they are pointed.
The hub measures 4 3/8" across the hub.
The hub has a RECESSED ornament in it's center.

The P0-2 was used in 69 and beyond.
It can be identified by looking at the end of the turbine fins at the hub…they are cut square.
The hub measures 3 7/8" across the hub.
The hub has a RECESSED ornament in it's center.

In addition, there is a difference in the way the turbine fins are handled at the valve stem hole on PO1 and PO2 caps.
Regards,
Alan

The passenger car caps don't have the recessed center ornament.

Default wheel trim covers

Alan, thanks for the good information. Over the Memorial Day Weekend at the Mid America Nationals in Springfield, Mo was bought two wheel trim covers at the swap meet. Now I know that they are the P02. A couple weeks prior I met a man at an A&W in Boonville, Mo who was towing a 1959 Corvette that he was going to repair for the owner who has owned the car for 42 years. He drives it every day. It has almost 500,000 miles on it, and is in surprising good condition. Anyway the car trailer has four wheel trim covers so I asked him if any was for sale. Turns out he has seven of them, and now I will know what I am looking for.

Again, thanks, Ed

Ps: I have 123,000 miles on mine. 5 years In California, 33 years in Alaska, 11 years in Mo

Hi HE,
33 years in Alaska!!!!
I knew someone who had a 69 in Alaska while he worked there in the early 70s…. but it was only a couple of years.

Alan

Alan, I am in the process of restoring the set of P02's on my '69 coupe. One question, are the sides of turbine fins painted black, with the outer edges chrome/polished? Or are the sides polished/chrome the same as the outer edges?

Thank you as always for your time and expert guidance.
