Default '82 Cluster Light Sockets

I removed the lights from behind the center cluster, speedometer, and tachometer. I am going to reinstall and noticed that some bulb sockets are different colors then others (grey and blue). Is there a specific reason for this? Do I have to reinstall specific sockets into specific places? If so does anyone have a schematic or any sort of insight as to what goes where?

I've noticed that there are different colors on my '81's. It doesn't matter as long as the base is the same size. There are a few different size bases made. But I think all of those that you mentioned may be the same size.

IIRC gray for illumination. Other colors for tell-tales.

From memory, I believe the warning lights are blue and the black ones use the standard black twist-in bulb recepticals.

They may call for a different bump part#, but when I replaced mine with soft white LEDS, I used the same bulb throughout (except low fuel module) with very satisfactory results.

All of the wires that light your dash for speedometer , tach etc. are gray . Make sure that your turn signal bulbs and temperature etc. are plugged into the right sockets . Turn everything on and mark everything with some masking tape and a pen so you remember as you re-install everything.

This is what your `82 instrument cluster looks like from behind.
It appears that, as a general rule the taupe (tan) bulb inserts are for the warning lights, and the blue are for illumination.

Hope this helps -

Disregard the lower, open socket hole at 7:00 position. It is remnant from a "Choke" light that was no longer used on `82's.

Hope this helps -

The blue (general illumination) sockets should get 3 lux trade #168 lamps
The black (warning/indicator) sockets should get 2 lux trade #194 lamps

You DEFINITELY want to use the three lux #168s for illumination as lower power lamps won't give adequate lighting.

The only possible problem with using the #168 lamps for the indicators is discoloration of the lans or deforming the housing if the lamp stays on for a good period of time.

If you are relamping be aware that the "lantern" on top of the gauge pack is a rather special bulb. It has a lens cast into the end of it. It is trade #558 and can usually only be found at places that specialize in lamps (or Corvettes).
