Several weeks ago the upper hinge on my drivers door broke from metal fatigue causing the door to drop and bend the lower hinge. In the process, the front edge of the door caught under the fender chipping a large swath of paint from the door. Fortunately there was no damage to the fiberglass and somehow, the fender was spared. I have bought a nice set of used hinges and had them bead blasted, replace the bushings and pins and had them painted to match the car.
Replacing the upper hinge requires tearing into the instrument panel and tearing the door apart. I am considering having the shop that painted the hinges put the new ones in.
The door will need to be painted and I am considering having the entire car painted this winter as this is an old paint job with the usual stress cracks, etc. Overall the car is a 3 footer but matching the metallic burgundy will be tough.
So, as a 69, it does not have the flairs at the rear of the wheel well and it throws rocks up the side of the car resulting in paint chips, particularly behind the doors. I gave up trying to fix those years ago as it is a loosing battle. Now that I am considering a complete paint job I am wondering what others with 68's and 69's do to preserve their new paint. Not driving it is not an option.
If you are concerned about paint chips after a new paint job you may want to look into something like the XPEL paint protection film or a 3M spray on film that can prevent areas from chipping.
if you zoom in and look very close behind my wheels you will see my solution.
I have built several nice cars and protect them all, I basically make a paper template of a curved mud flap,
then have several cut out of leaxan, and attach with clip on binder clips.
so no holes are drilled into body, have never lost one even if I do I HAVE SPARES.
THEY KEEP THE ROCKS OFF., Show time I just remove them, then slip them back into place.

Checked out their web site and this product looks interesting. Thanks

That looks like a straight forward solution. Thanks for the idea.

Look closely at this picture, you almost can't see this, I know I never notice it.
There is also a product called "Cleartastic" which is cut to shape for certain areas on your car. I've used that at the front of the rear fender well and it works fine.

I like the look of the cleartastic product. How well does it protect the rear quarterpanels?
I did not research the 'cleartastic' stuff and see how thick kit is....versus the 3M stuff.

What I like about the Cleartastic for small areas is that it has no adhesive. I put it on with eyeglass cleaner and it stays on for highway speeds.

I do not have it on the rear quarter panels. My wheel guards have completely protected that area. They are rolled aluminum with Kevlar fiberglassed to the back side. One place I have Cleartastic is forward of the rear wheel well. I've probably hit a few autoX cones with it and have seen no effects. I also have it in the door jam area to protect against seat belt dings.
