Absolutely confused on steering column question...
It all started when I decided to replace the lower steering column bearing... It's a '69 (I think) standard column and I've had it apart four times trying to figure it out. But I'm at a loss and calling in reinforcements - that's you all.
When I turn the key, it just pushes the top sections of the column away from the main part. The only way, then, to get the car to start is to push on the wheel to hold it in place so the rod with actuate the ignition switch. I've printed off all the breakdowns I can find (including all Jim Shea's stuff) and cannot, for the life of me, figure out what I've done wrong. What holds the collar (the part with the ignition cylinder) to the rest of the column?
Ignore the previous post. I see that you were referring to the bolts underneath the turn signal switch. I am positive they are there, so I was trying to avoid pulling that silly circlip again (for the 4th time...). But I think you may be right that those bolts are supposed to be what holds it together. Not sure what the deal is, but it's looks like I'll pull it apart again to look. Thanks for the help!
