Looking for more help. I'm going to paint the lower birdcage/dash a pillar area with por 15 for the slight surface rust. I was going to pull the windshield trim to make sure it was solid also and cover it with POR 15 also but am concerned. I've looked up different people covering removing the trim. I'm worried about breaking some of the trim and or clips. Also about pulling out the windshield. I've looked to see if there are replacement trim in case I break anything but cant seem to find any. I'm not concerned about originality but would like to have a source to get repo trim that I can use just in case. If not I'll just let it be and hope its all good under there or wait until paint and have them do it?
Hi Pmc,
There're currently no reproductions being made of the stainless steel windshield trim or the stainless a-pillar weatherstrip retainer.
If you use caution in removing the trim there's very little likelihood of damaging it.
The clips that are screwed to the windshield header are readily available but they're not likely to be damaged either.
You do need to be very careful working around the windshield with any sort of 'hard' tools like screwdrivers or putty knives since it's extremely easy to 'nick' the edge of the glass which will often result in a crack.
I'd be very cautious about using POR on the windshield frame itself.

Alan

Hi Alan, I am in the middle of this right now. What is the concern about POR on the windshield frame? I am trying to kill all the rust now and keep it at bay until I come back later to fix it when I have the body off the frame.
First, POR (Paint Over Rust) by it's very nature is formulated to apply over rusty surfaces.
When repairing/preparing the windshield header and a-pillars I think all signs of rust should be removed before applying any paint.
Second, not all paints and windshield installation sealers adhere well to POR. Part of the success of sealing the windshield depends on the bond of the sealer to the finish on the windshield frame.
I didnt think of that. I thought use POR15 over surface rust on the windshield frame was sort of common practice. I was going to use POR and then the top coat to seal it.

Thanks Alan, That makes sense. I am kind of in the holding the insomniac rust goblins at bay for a year or so until I can properly weld on the frame. I will make sure before I get to the sealing part I will not go over the POR.
