What are your goals for the HP rating from the engine you want in your 1974. Will you continue to use the TH-400 transmission or are you swapping it out for a manual like a TKO, T-56, or some other transmission. Try to take the holistic approach to the decision, you will be happier with the choices you make and minimize the surprises later when you are driving it down the road once again.

Good luck with your decisions.

Best regards,
as of now the motor and trans are out of the car. plans are to send both out for rebuild. don't have a ton of money so it wont be to extensive, maybe mild cam shift kit and headers. have to stay in my budget lol. have to save money for paint.

OK, now I see what you mean. But the OP still hasn't confirmed that the engine suffix code is CLA (unless I missed it). The last word I heard was that the last two characters of the engine suffix code could not be read.

OP, can you take another look at let us know everything that is on the engine pad. Hopefully a picture would help. Thanks.

On the response posted earlier it has a "4" listed with the codes. The titles were not shown but the titles say that the "4" shown means 4 barrel carb, and not a 4 bolt main. OP asked if it was a 4 bolt main because he saw the 4 listed. I was clarifying for him.

OP, is that correct? Can you absolutely see the engine suffix code of "CLA" on the block?

cannot make out the last of the suffix. Assuming it's CLA It does have the 400 auto trans.

Enjoying reading this post as I'm interested in a 71 LS-5.

The info on this post (and the CF in general) is "top notch"!

OK, good job.

I agree that the engine suffix code is CLA.

I also think that the VIN derivative is 14S409618 (not 14S469618). THis would be the engine for a 1974 Corvette, 9618th Corvette off of the line that year.

Cleaning the paint and grease off of the engine pad will make things clearer.
