Default Rear diff coding issue

Yes, another rear diff code question. This is in a current c2 refresh I am doing, though I have the original to install, I would like to find what this coding means. I have found a plethora of information on here and the www but I can not find the CAB code anywhere for 1970. I have attached a picture of the stamping (1 CAB 7 31 70 W) Any help would be appreciated.

From what I found in my restoration book everything with the stamp looks correct except the CAB. I get 1st shift, July 31, 1970 at the Warren motive plant. Do you know what the gear ratio is? Maybe it was stamped incorrectly?

I have not verified the ratio, I can not assume it is original to the diff. casing either since it is not even original to the car. I am just stumped on the CAB.

Hi,
I'm wondering about a differential produced on the last day of July 1970 having a 3 letter code…..it wasn't likely that it was going into a 70 model year Corvette was it?
It seems more likely it was going to end up in an early 71 car?
When did the axle plants begin assembling 1971 model year differentials?
???
Regards,
Alan

I believe all 1970 and even late 69 had a 3 letter code and 1971 went back to a 2 letter code. Unless the format changed and the C has a different meaning in 1971 because there is a code AB.

Hi Bill,
My point was the date when this differential was assembled…. why was the plant building 1970 differentials on the last day of July 1970?
Was the intent to stamp it AB for the start of 1971 production but instead it got stamped CAB?
Regards,
Alan

1970 has engine codes that go through July so it isn't unfeasible.

Hi Bill,

"1970 has engine codes that go through July so it isn't unfeasible"

So this differential assembled in the last day of July, made it to St.Louis on the same day to be installed in a 70 model year car….. or are you saying that some 1970 model year cars were assembled in St.Louis during the beginning of August of 1970???
Regards,
Alan
