My car is an '80. I picked it up about a month and 1/2 ago. Was going to replace the speakers in the dash so I looked at videos for a how to.
All of them show using a screwdriver to pop the grill off. Obviously that won't work with mine as it appears to be one molded piece. I'd have to assume its aftermarket?
Something tells me there are already fairly modern speakers under that shell and that you have little or nothing to gain and potentially lots to loose by replacing them.

It may be a shell over the top of the original dash. Cheap fix for cracked and faded dash pads.
Absolutely....One you slit it and get to the speaker grilles, and then pry them out GENTLY....then your problems begin!
I just did the speakers for my 82 CE, replacing the original Delco units.
I had to make a tool without a ratchet just a L with the 3/8 drive cut down to the max, socket cut down to a nub(5/16th screws I recall) and put blue tape on the windshield...then 1/16th turn at a time I unscrewed the self tappers.
Took hours!
The Aft ones are easy with a conventional ratchet...the fore outside ones are a flying bee-otch!

Tim is correct, this is the generic dash pad cap which has the grille made into it.
The speakers and the original grilles are probably underneath it. The speakers can be removed from the original pad by popping the grill out. We made a tool out of an old socket and wrench to remove the screws.
Is there a stereo in your car? Looks like a radio delete block plate to me. If there was no factory unit, there should have been no dash speakers installed.

Yes there was a stereo in it. That is just a small plastic cover piece over the hole. All the witted are there, still on the original harness plugs.
