hello friends I have a set of seats from a 69 that I will be selling on here shortly ,my question is does both seats have the release on the left hand side .I had a 68 and also a 69 ,and cant remember if they were like that, thanks yes im getting old!!!
They are all like that.....release on the left side. The seats are interchangeable, no separate left and right.
Further it is the same shoulder belt chrome bracket on both sides and that just looks wrong. Actually I think the tilt on the same side is kind of handy for rear compartment access while sitting in the driver's seat.
Hi,
I think it was very likely a cost cutting measure since it required just one seat back and one set of seat release hardware.
Even when the release was moved to the rear, upper center, of the seat in 70, it was done in such a way that there was just one seat back and one set of release hardware required.
Regards,
Alan
LOL! I showed this to my prospective buyer (now the current owner) last week. I told him I was giving him the benefit of years of ownership, and that otherwise after 5 or 6 years of blissful carefree ownership he might look at his seats one day and wonder if he actually had 2 drivers seats in his car!
I will never understand how they could possibly green light the early 68 seat latch position, which was about three inches above the seat cushion!!! Even the second design position is very heard to reach. Lou.

I have the early 68 seat release and they are a pain to get to from either side of the car, i guess thats why it changed midyear
Frankly, given the complexity of the assemblies and subassemblies, it is amazing that there are not MORE things like the 68 seat backs. I am certain at some point they assembled what was probably the 63rd version of the preproduction car, saw that problem, looked at the machining rework calendar and said something like, "no time left, we're gonna have to make a running change. We're going to production with this for now." I have been the subsystem designer pleading for one more change AND the program manager faced with making the call. I think I prefer my new position of 'Defender of Odd Things'.
Yes, they had to change the seat back dies to change the handle location. I beat the crap out of my seat back metal and bought the new parts to change my first design seat to the higher position. This was when the car was only a few years old and the only other option was to buy a complete new seat from GM. I am a 45 year owner, and you guys have no idea how lucky you are to have the parts available. Back then, there were NO Corvette suppliers or used Corvette parts places. You only had GM over the counter parts. Lou.
