Hi Bart,
Some tank sheets have 2 numbers written in pencil on them.

Here's an example from January 1971:
186 is written on the sheet and is also in several locations on the car.
89 is written on the sheet and is the last 3 digits of the VIN sequence number… minus 500.

Regards,
Alan

FYI - The job number doesn't always have to mathematically jive with the VIN. My 70 is job # 270 (written in four places on the body), while the VIN is 9516.

Correct. Also, in some earlier year cars (1968 and back) the hand written number on the tank sticker could be off by a few VIN numbers while still using the 500 unit method. By 69 they seemed to have paid more attention to the TS job number and I have not personally seen any that were off at all.

And another odd piece of info. Whoever was doing the cars in 69 during 712000 thru about 717000 was writing the last 4 digits of the vin in large numbers on the bottom of the tank sticker below the typed info. Not all cars but quite a few.

Ed...if you keep up with this intense scrutiny of documentation, you just might end up with a really great vocation for your retirement...sorta an Al Grenning of paper!

Interesting! So all we really know is that nothing was certain back in the day. I know some people will not believe it, but my October 1968 car has a 1968 core support, radiator, shroud and vacuum tank.

But I'm somewhat limited to 1969....and I'm happy to offer my opinion for free. I have to be careful about what I post because I know there are some things I've noticed that the repro paper guys are not paying attention to. Don't want to tip them off.
