I never found N14 written anywhere on the interior of my car after pulling the original carpet.
Tank sticker had the number 77 penciled in. Found 177 in the engine compartment passenger side footwell and behind the passenger side compartment in the rear. My VIN is 21077.

I would imagine since the N14 option was not offered at the beginning of production, the list of options given to dealers in the Fall/Summer of 68 did not list it. With most of the dealerships still being small and perhaps not selling many Corvettes in the first place, were not aware of the option ever coming available. My experience buying new Corvettes in the early 70's, I was the one with the list of options I wanted, the dealerships were clueless.
I looked at the N-14 sheets in the 69 AIM and it appears they were being drawn during mid-October 1968 and have a Release Date of October 25, 1968.
They continued to be revised during the end of 68 and through much of 69.
Does the fact that an early December 1968 built car appears to have had the side exhaust option indicate that the dealer was aware of the option, or at least knew enough to get it on the order, ABOUT the same time the AIM drawings we're released?
I agree with you that many buyers went to their dealer with the list of options written down. It was big fun to pour over the brochures and make lists of options we'd love to order! But for most young buyers that didn't happen very often.
I have original dealer wholesale order sheets from 1969 that the dealers used to order all corvettes. Those sheets also include individual Order Numbers that would be found on the tank sticker and window sticker.
They all include the N14 option with the revised date of July 1968. The dealers knew before the production run began for 1969 about the side exhuast option. The problem as I understand it was an equipment production issue. I really don't know the reason they had an issue or the actual problem but I do know people ordered the N14 early on but the cars were not being delivered. Dealers told these customers they could either wait for there car to be built or skip the option to get there car sooner. Many said forget it just to get there new car.
I have posted pics of the wholesale dealer sheets recently. I can post more if someone wants to see them or you could look up some of my old posts.
Hi Ed,
Thanks for that information.
Was the N-14 option mentioned in the 69 Sales Brochure? Or a car with it shown?
I guess those photos were probably taken QUITE early so perhaps all the parts needed weren't available to put on a car at that point?!?
Regards,
Alan

Alan, I don't post a lot here but read a lot and I know your expertise so I thought I would comment. My NCRS number is 1256. I have in my file the original brochure I ordered my 69 from. "Side-Mounted Exhaust" is listed as a box to be checked in the brochure and there is a picture of it in the brochure.
But here's a mystery...there is no box to check for white letter tires but written underneath "red or white stripe tires" in my handwriting is "white letter tires" And that's what she came with. I still have the car and the original set of tires so it seems options were added and if you were aware of them you could get them.

White letter tires were added as an option much later in the model year in 69 but that was pretty much the only one added for 69. Along with headrests being a mandatory option which also changed the retail price during the model run as they deleted it from the option list and just made it required standard equipment.
Hi LeeS,
It's interesting to have some with first hand knowledge and experience pipe up.
I wish you would consider doing that more often.
Thanks for your insight!

Alan

Hi Alan, I have a 69 that has the N-14 option. It was built on Oct. 30 1969. The attached picture I took from the original Sales Brochure definitely lists the option and shows a picture of a coupe with them. I am not sure when they were first available.

Do you have documentation?
I have heard lots of people say they have one that was made before January but I really would like to see one that actually has some form of GM docs to go with it. So far nobody has stepped up that I know of.
If you have some docs please post some pics. I would like to be able to verify one that early.
The 1969 Chevrolet Dealer Price and Facts book, 1st edition dated Sept 1968 includes N14.
Second pic from the GM Heritage collection, notice date on bottom, also Sept 1968.
Hello Paul,
That's for the PM's.
If you notice, the one tank sticker you sent me is actually of the car that I currently own, the Blue roadster. If you notice the "Date Recieved" is date mid October 1968. But my car was not competed until January 11th 1969.
I also posted a pic of that tank sticker in post 4 of this thread.

Sorry about that I don't have a description of where they came from

Hello Paul,
No problem at all. Thanks for even looking for examples. I have kept all vin information with any doc info I have collected.
The only docs I have for an earlier car than mine that have factory side exhaust is for a car built about 800 units before mine vin # 712088. Its a green 435 coupe. The "Date Received" on that car is Oct 7, 1968. Again, a long delay before it was produced.
