Only you can decide what you want/need. Personally the C3 is my favorite Corvette body style and that's what I have. It's also my daily driver which is a plus to me.
Buy what you want. If its going to be your daily driver and you can maintain an old car which by what your saying you can go for the C3 if that's whats pulling your emotional strings. When I bought mine it was my second car so at the time it was not my daily driver. I did a lot of work to it over the years so everything in the drive-train except for the transmission has been rebuilt or replaced. If you plan on driving a C3 daily then I suggest you buy the best one you can afford.
I'm actually looking at C5 and C6's right now to put the C3 back on weekend duty. I prefer the C6 but would entertain a C5Z.
